A, the green light jeff Eklund burst out o f ,the pa ck and grabbed the hol esh ot , H e was hotly pursued by Ro b Damron, Aaron Hill 'a nd Steve Mayfi eld. . Two laps into the even t rid ers began to show signs of troub le in tum three. The surface began to ge t slippery, as moisture worked up through the lormerly dry clay. Eklund lost control in turn three and wen t down. Damron in herited th e lead , but had his ha nd s fu ll with a hard-charging Hill. Steve Mayfield a lso crashed in tu rn th ree. taking Paul Iwa naga and Rick Pea rce wi th him. For the remaining laps of the 12-lap featu re. ' h e riders rude cauuousty. and many ad opted a higher line th ro ugh turns three a nd four. Damron greeted the checkers first a head of H ill and Allon McBee. " I had no idea that th e moisture would come back in onl y one turn ," said Damron, " bu t beca us e of heav y ra ins the co ur se wa s not as smooth as I had anticipa ted. " On Sunday Ron Brown was th e ea rly lead er in th e Open Expe rt main , but he was soon overtaken by Rob Damron. O nce in front, Da mron led every la p .
