Dave Co upe raced to victories in the 250cc 'Expert and Vet Expert classes. Co upe topped both 250cc Expert mo tos just ah ead of a hard- char ging Pete Murray, wh o finished second in both motos. Many riders felt the race shou ld'v e been restarted, bu t the race contin ued and Ryan Carlisle scored the win over Phil Lawrence and Russ Wageman. The second hea t was controlled by defending Ultracross Ch amp ion Mike Craig, who estab lished the fastest heatrace la p time whi ch was nearly five seconds faster than his nearest competi tor. Wh en the main event blasted off it was Bro oks who esta blished the pac e by the end of the firs t la p whi le Craig was ripping throug h the pac k after starting 18th. "The key to win ning is ri ding agg ressively and that still may not be enough because riders like Holl ey and Brooks will hold it on," said Craig befo re the start of th e main. " I knew th ere was too much time for him to make up so I stayed at my same pace and kep t watc h on his progress. Broo ks even felt hi s win was a bit tainted. " I crashed in m y heat race and fini shed seventh," said Brooks. " It 's kind of unfair when a rid er gets to start on the front row ."
