In the comb ined race, SilverLOn, Oregon's D iven left the field in h is d ust at the start and rode to an unchallenged win aboard hi s Sinisalo/ Oakley/ Sh oei-backed Kawasaki . H uffman suffered an 18th p lace start but charged into second place by .th e moto's end. Jeff Dement, from nearby Spring, Texas, blasted off th e line in the first Mini Senior ( 14. 16) rnoto, but Craig Decker and David Pingree were in hot pursuit. Although Deck er made repeated attempts to pas s th e leader, Dement held the ch allenger at ba y and crossed the finish line ou t in front. Dement led th e rest of th e m inis into the first turn in the second moLO: but Decker quickly displaced th e Suzuk i support rider on the opening lap. Dement stalked the Kawasaki T eam Green/ AXO /Scott/Maxima/Pro Circuit/ Shoei/CTi/V P/ J oJ o 's/ Re nthal Tsubaki-backed rider, but lost control on the second lap and went down. Pingree inherited second and was abl e to hol d off a hard-charging Dement for the remainder of the race. Decker scored the moto and overall wins. " Once I got by Dem ent, I knew I coul d hold h im off ," said Decker. ' " When he cras hed it just made it that much easier." After the seco nd moto , ho wever, Demen t filed a p ro test aga inst Decker, charging hi m with usin g an illegal motor . Demen t's Kawasaki was torn do wn a nd declared legal by G C offi cials. Nadine H o lbert blasted off th e starting gate in the first Ladies moto, with Tammy Rice, Jeannie Pru itt and Mercedes Gonzalez close behind. Gonzalez quickly passed Pruitt and Rice, and set out after Holbert. As the field emerged [ro m the trees, it was th e Kaw asak i Team Green/ AXO/ Renth a I/P ro Circuit/Scott/Maximasponsored Gonzalez out front. Once in front, Gonzalez pulled out a commanding lead and went o n unchal lenged. Kimberly Sybert recov er ed from a poor start and swooped past Rice and Pru itt. Although sh e began to gain o n Holbert, Sybert settled [or third place at the finish. Gonzalez was first into turn one in moto two, with Pruitt and Rice in tow . Sybert started in midpack, but quickl y sliced through the field and into fourth. Whi le Gonzalez pulled away, Sybert stormed past Ri ce and P ru itt and sett led into the second place: Gonzalez crossed the fin ish line wi th a commanding lead over Sybert, Pruitt and Rice. . " I rode like a girl in the first rnoto, ' joked Gonzalez. " But in rno to two everything came toge ther." " It was hard racing a mini against the bigger bikes," sai d Sybert, who was aboard a H onda CR80 while Gonzalez rode a Kawasak i KXI 25. "I got rea lly bad starts in both motos and had to pa ss a lot of people." Kawasaki T eam Green /Barrs Competition/Scon/Dun lop/PJ I / Sh oei / Sunsta r/Tsubak i-sponsored Robb ie Skaggs scored th e victory in the Min i Senior (12-13) class, emerging victorious after a three-wa y tie [or the top position. The Kansas rider's 3-1 scores edged out Clint Latham's consistent 2-2, while Robbie Reynard won the first rnoto, but crashed wh ile leading moLO two and dropped to th ird. An swer / Sco tt- sp onso red Texan Charley Bogard scored the win in the 60cc Senior (9-11) class, taking advan· tage of a second·moLO spill by early leader J immy Varis . Varis smoked to the first moto w.in ahead of Bogard and Paul Ito (57) holeshot the Mini Bike Senior 12·13 class ahead of Robbi e Skaggs (44), Ryan Clark (66) and Robbi e Reynard (67). stormed to the front of th e pack in th e second moto before going down. H o nda-mo unt ed Chan Baker used consistency and a little luck LO make his trip from Oklahoma worthwhile, as he captured the overall win in the Open class. Kell y Pich el jam med to the front of the pa ck in the first moto but was lat er sidelined with a broken shock link o n the last lap, whi ch allowed Baker to score the moto win . Pichel dominated th e seco nd moto, but it was Baker wh o earned the overall with a consistent second pla ce finish . The 125cc Beginner cla ss victory went ro T exan Shane Miller, who used consisten t fini shes to earn the o vera ll. Gary Graeser nabbed th e win in th e div ision one first rnoto, ahead of Mill er and Ri chard Ficker. The division two ' first moto win went 10 Karl Kouldock, who beat Scott Deubler and David Reed across th e finish lin e. In the seco nd rnoto, Honda-mounted Mill er cha rged into the lead and edged o u t Deubler and Ficker at the finish line 10 score his victory . Granbury, Texas ' Ra nd y Denb y smo ked both motos on his Kawasaki KX250 in the 250cc Stock Novi ce class, as he led the first moto from star t to finish, and came from third pla ce in the second rnoto to secure his victory. Deral Hunter and David Chase gave Denby a run for his money in the opening rnoto, and Chad Pl umlee and Jimmy Wilson trailed in moto two . .
