H awthorn e went down in the first turn wit h severa l o thers riders, and restarted in last pl ace. At th e ha lfw ay poi nt, Langford seemed confident the win was h is as long as lapped traffi c did not get in h is way. The race for second began to develop betw een Clay H oenshell and Travis Hodges, Hawthorne was now up to II th , attacking each position for valuabl e champ io nship points. On the last lap, Langford held a sixsecond lead over Hoenshell and rode the final lap with ease. Hawthorne had moved up to fifth behind Kip Sandell. The two ran wheel to wheel on the final lap with Sandell holding off Hawthorne. . " I'm not sure wh at happened in the first turn on the start, 'all I know is severa l of us went down," said Hawth orne. " I rode as hard as possible kn owing Langford was out front, but wh en I caugh t Sandell his pa ce seemed to pic k up and I couldn ' t get by." K At the start of the 250cc main, Hawthorne jumped out to an early lead over Jim Holley with Langford th ird and Sandell fourth. On lap four, Holley went under Hawthorne to take the lead , wh ile Langford hung back abo ut 20 yards. " I knew I was faster, but I wanted to wat ch their lin es before I made my move," Langford said. On lap six, La ngford moved Hawthorne back 10 thi rd and went to work o n H oll ey. H oll ey a n d La ngford passed o ne another over the jumps and through the whoops, and ha d the fans on their feet. " At Arenacross raci ng you can reall y hear the cro wd, and a t times it breaks your concentration becau se you 're no t exactly sure wh at th ey're cheerin g about," said Holl ey. On lap n ine of the 20·l ap final , H oll ey was righ t on the rear wh eel of Langford as th ey en tered a righ t-hand turn. Lan gford went lo w to pass a la pped rider and ca ught h is leg o n a hay bale and fell over. Holley tr ied to sto p, bu t ran in to La ng ford and went down . " If Hawth orn e wins bo th mains tonig h t and I fin ish second, I will win the Cham p ionsh ips by 10 poin ts and that's enough for me," said La ngford. At th e start of th e 125cc main, H awtho rn e grabbed a handf ul of thro tt le, a nd sh o t into the lea d. Chasing Hawthorne was Sandell wit h Terry T inney hangi ng o nto th ird. At the finish it was Hawth orne first, Langford second and Tinney th ird. " I kn ew wha t I had to do, but Langford also knew wh at he had to do , it's going to come down to the 250cc main to decide the championshi p," said Hawthorne. " I want this championship bad! Dennis and I are good friends and he has been a gr eat cham pion, but I want that numb er o ne pl ate ;" said Langford. Kip Sandell shot into the lead off the start of the 250cc main event , only to go down before the com pletion of the first lap. Langford took the lead with Tinney second and Scott Fletcher third. Hawthorne was back in sixth. At the halfway flags , Langford was out front, being pressured by Tinney with Holley running third. On the move from a poor start was Clay Hoenshell, who had now moved into fifth behind Hawthorne. With two laps to go , Hoenshell let it all hang out and passed both Hawthorne and Tinney to move into third. On the final lap, Hawthorne tried to pass Hoenshell but had to settle for fourth.
