Brown blitzes Muddy Creek By Barbara and Loren Williams BLOUNTVILLE, TN, MAR. 10 here was no stopping Mike Brown at Muddy Creek Raceway. Not the competition, not a crash, nor the frigid weather could make Brown falter as he flew to a fourmoto sweep of the 125 and 250cc A classes. The event was the opening round or the I5-round AMA-sanctioned Pizza Plus Southeast Regional Championship MX MegaSeries, and 488 entrants from eight southeastern states plus Wisconsin braved the arctic weather. Snow flurries felI during the first half or the day, while a frigid wind blew constantly. Brown, who hails from Tennessee, was fresh of f a couple of good showings in Florida where he led a portion or a 125cc class mo to at the opening round of the 1251250cc National Championship MX Series at Gainesvi Ile, A week la ter he ran as high as fourth until a crash knocked him back to eighth in the I25cc Eastern Regional main event at the Daytona Supercross. When the first 125cc A moto left the line at Muddy Creek, Kenny Kizzar jumped into the lead with Brown crowding his footpegs, and the rest of the 18-rider pack pushing both of them, hoping for a mistake. Brown T 22 took the inside line in turn two at the top of the first hill, cramped his Jim's M.e. Sales/ShoeilDunlop/Silkolene/ AlumilitelTsubaki/ Acerbis/ Answer/ Smith/Pro Circuit-backed Honda too tight and went down. Brown had to wait for the pack to swarm past him before he could remount in last, When the pack cleared, Brown was quickly underway and advanced to fourth a lap and a half later. Halfway through lap four, Brown had worked up to second and nipped Kizzar in the woods section. Brown then stretched out a six-second lead at the checkered flag. . "I had to ride hard," said Brown. "It was the only way to stay warm!" After a fourth-place start, Chad Lough held second at one point until a bobble dropped him back to sixth. Lough worked back into fourth behind Brown, Kizzar an d William Cox, then took third when Cox drifted wide in the last turn. The second moto didn't provide as much action as the first race, as Brown led Kizzar, Lough, Cox and Paul Dalton the entire way. Brown was gone when the gate dropped for the first 250cc A rnoto and he ran away to win by a margin of 20 seconds. Kizzar, realizing Brown was o ut of reach , settled into second, as Lough wat ched him Irom behind. Lough picked up the pace in the second half of the moto and by the last lap was breathing down Kizzar's neck. Heading to the finish, Lough came up even with Kizzar dow n the las t stra ight. The chec kered flag was at the apex of the last turn and Kizzar squeezed Lough to the fence to hold on to second by a knob. Dalton claimed third after Cox felI near the finish. Bro wn pulIed his third holeshot of th e day in the final 250cc A moto and led wire-to-wire . Kizzar nailed second, while Dalton scooted past Lough and held him off to claim third. Joshua Steel, a standout in the Schoolboy class last year, made the jump to B class competition in a big way. Steel ended up a double winner in the 125 and 250cc divisions as he garnered alI four moto wins. Adam Merrick was the runner-up in both classes, while defending class champ Steve Hyatt was left third in the l25cc B class and Mitchell Jones claimed third in the 250cc division. Jones also came out on top of the Unlimited Amateur class after moto one winner 'Cu rt is Urps retired from the second moto with mechanical problems. . Kevin Austin buttoned up both the 25+ B and Senior B classes with rno to wins across the board. "Not bad for an old guy who can't feel his fingers," said Austin. "After about two laps my han ds went numb from the cold, and if I'd had to bang bars with anyone I would've let go." ct Resu lts 500: I. Patrick Haynes (Yam ); 2. Thomas Hamby (ha ): 3.
