Triumph-mounted Gene Romero fin ished secon d, and BSA-mou nted Don Emde was third. Roger Reiman, Jim Odom, Chuck Palmgren, J ess Thomas, Tom Rockwood, Dave Smith and Kel Carruthers rounded ou t the top 10. Mann average d 104.73 mph, breaking the previous record of 102.69 mph that he set the year before on a Honda. The win ner's share of. the purse amounted to $5000. For the first time , qualifying la ps were taken on the 3.81-mile combined ova l/infield road course rather than on the 2.5-mile tri-oval and it was Paul Smartstart in g the race on the po le, having qual ified at 107.94 m p h aboard a Triump h. Smart dropped out of the 53-lap race wh ile leadin g on lap 42. Attendance was estimated at 4215 00. Gary Scott finished second aboard a Kawasaki. Friday night's short tra ck was won by Harley-Davidson Sprintmounted Rex Beauchamp, with Ossa -mounted Mike Gerald finishing second. Riding a H usq varn a, Bryan Kenney topped CZ-mounted J im Weinert and fellow Husqvarna rider Bob Grossi in the Open class a t the Daytona MX. Gunnar Lindstrom made it a H usky sweep by winning the 250cc class over Ossa -mounted Barry Higgins and Bultaco-rno u n ted Gary Bailey.
