Mark Davidson held off Jay Skidmore to win the over 30 class wi th Craig Breckon and Tom Cummings fin ishing third and four th, respectively. Rocky Wat son led defending Nation al Champion Bill Snyder until lap four when Snyder took over. A last ditch effort by Watson to take th e win saw him slide off the groov e and drop to fourth place behind Norman Lavidlette and Gene O 'Boyle. Scott R.J. Overholt top ped the 250cc DTX class final and also scored wins in the 250cc Band 500cc B classes on Sunday. Paul Lynch won the 125cc class final on Monday, topping Tommy Hayden (I), Nicky Ha yden (69) and Ben BelIman (37B). The American Motorcycle Ins titute-spon sored, DMR promoted races serve as a training gro und for the youngsters, a playgro und for the oldsters, and thi s year a proving grou nd for severa l top p rofessional riders wh o would be racin g on the track later in the week. After a delay caused by the strong storms th at swep t through the Daytona area, it was l5-year-old R.j. Overholt making the trip down from New York worthwhile by top ping three of the 21 classes that were ru n. The po pu lar ity of the DTX classes were evident a t Municipal Stadium with both the 85cc and 250cc DTX classes featuring large turnou ts. When all was said and done, Paul Lynch won F 30 a race-long battle from first John Winsett and then Nicky Hayden in th e 85cc class. Overh olt, meanwhile, won his first race of the ni gh t when he top ped Jody Ph elps in th e 250cc DTX class. The large field of Pro- Am riders was led home by Will iam Adam s in a close race over Robert Weiss, Eric O 'Boyle and George Garvis. The 85cc (7-11) class was a real barn bu rner as four youngsters waged a war for th e lead. John Win sett , J enny Hayden, Nicky Hayden and Bryan Bigelow fought with Bigelow work ing his way to the win over Jenny Ha yden , Win sett and Nick y Hayden. The Junior/Expert class fin al for professional racer s looked to be all Les Washbon 's, but veteran Garth Brow closed in on Washbon only to be nipped at the finish line. Bill Newkirk, Randy Roose and Audie Huff rounded out the top five finishers. Even though Kenn y Coolbeth , Jr., ra n awa y with the 250cc main, Scott Snoop, Brian Strong and Mike Hacker pu t on a great show as they diced for . second. Strong ended up taking the . runn er-up spot over Snoop and Hacker. Sno op was involved in another close battle in the 500cc A class, but this time he was able to garner the victory as he edged Rob ert Weiss. Chad Heideman held off Paul Morgan for third place. The 250cc Band 500cc B classes were both large and Overholt ran away with th e finals in both. MAR. 4 ith over 500 entries spl it into 21 classes, a hectic two days of Amateur-Youth and Pro class racing ended at Daytona Municipal Stadium with Paul Lynch the second day 's big winner. The l2 -ye;u -old Maryland speedster won three classes. With a large turnout of pro riders on hand, the Pro-Am race win went to Robert Weiss with Doug O'Boyie finishing second ahead of Kevin Varnes . Rookie Expert Jason Fletcher ran away with the Junior/Expert main, topping Georgie Price, Mike Dillon and Jeff Eklund. The Open class was a classic. Washington's Noah Kirkland broke on top with Bobby Myers, Kenny Coolbeth and Robert Gette close behind. W
