THE CHAMPIONSHIPS
In 1990 METZELER Chalked Up Over 20 Roadracing and
Offroad Championships Throughout North America
N igel Gale won the Twin Sport final.
Bartels" Performance Products Tripp
Nobles, were circling the track lik e a
six-wheeled machine and Gal e, for
one, hadn't a clu e as to how the sevenlap, 25-mile race wou ld fin ish.
" I didn't know who wou ld win," th e
.transplanted Englishman said. " We're
bo th competitive on equal bikes , and
we wanted to get away using the draft,
but Randy (Texter) was in th ere."
Texter wasn't in there at the end .
however, blowi ng up hi s transmission
on the fifth lap leavi ng it to the two
Bartels' riders.
"Then it was just the two of us and
we're looking at each other saying,
'Who's it go in g to be?' " Gal e said.
Minutes later Gal e answered the
question , drafting past Nobles on the
ru n to th e flag to nip him at th e line
by a scant .560 seconds. The pair also
finished one- two in th e inaugural
Twin Sports race here las t year.
" I got real lu cky, 1 mu st say," Ga le
said. "O n the last lap , 1 nearly lost it
in the chicane and 1 stilI managed to
cat ch th e draft . On th e last lap 1 went
into the chicane and 1 h it a bump and
got in a big tank-slapper. 1 powered
on through it, but 1 was probably 5060 feet behind behind Tripp after that.
1 was back on the ga s as soo n as 1 got
it straight. 1 just tried to follow h is
line and pi ck up some dirty air and
get sucked along."
"I thought 1 cou ld get away a coup le
of times towards the end, but he tucked
right into th e dra ft," Nobl es, of Macon ,
Georgia, said. " We managed to get
some go od lap times by worki ng
together. "

Nobles th anked the Har ley Ow ners
Group from Macon that were in
H arl ey Heaven , a set of grandstands
on th e o uts ide of th e backstretch
chicane.
" I could hear them over all the
others," he said.
Gale's average speed was 9 1.754
mph, slightly above last year's 91.202
mph mark.
Third pl ace went to Scott Zampach
after an imp ressive rid e consider ing he

al ong wi th Kevin . Ren tzell since
neither ran the series last year. Grid
- positions were determ in ed from last
year 's sta ndings . Aside from his position, Zampach had other problems
with the start.
" Whe n the one- mi n ute board went
up, 1 kn ock ed the bike into gear and
1 couldn't find ne ut ral," Zam pach,
riding a Don Tilley H -D 883, said.
" When th e flag came out, 1 just held
a finger on th e sta rter bu tton and it
0'1
