O'Boyles, Hart hot at Municipal Stadium By Henny Ray Abrams DAYTONA BEACH, FL, MAR. 6 he O'Boyle brothers, Eric and Douglas, steered their H ondas to a one-two finish in the Pro-Am final on Daytona Beach 's slick and grooved Municipal Stadium oval while the Juniors were topped by Hart Racing's Wood-Rotax-mountedJames Hart. Before a sparse crowd on a slightly cool Florida night, Douglas O'Boyle won the fastest of the six , six-lap ProAm heats while his brother, Eric , won the fastest of the three 12-rider, eightlap semis, though Eric 's mark was easil y explained. The first semi was inadvertently run T for nine laps, Eric won th e second, and th e third was never timed. Gettin g his choice of the start ing spot, Eric put the rear tir e of hi s First Class. Gl ass/Riverside Service-backed Honda on the heart of the egg -sha ped groov e, next to the wall , with hi s brother at his left side. Wh en the light flashed gr een, he sped off, never t o be cha lle nged. The win was emph atic and Eric O 'Boyl e credited it to two th ings; hi s loaner motor and his rear tire.• "What mak es th is great is that this is my bro ther's backup mo tor ," Eric, 28, said. " I got the righ t Goodyear on the back an d scuffed it up a litt le in the heats." He said he and Douglas, 22, had been racing for four or five years, mostly ice racing around their Breckenridge , Mi chigan , h ome. Dou gl as is a lso backed by Liquid Molding Systems . Douglas' second pl ace fini sh was harder fought than hi s brother's win. Trailing Penn State Cycles's Kevin Varnes from the start, O 'Boyl e, the younger, slid under Varn es in the last two cor ners to take second. Varn es was third a good distance ahead of Chris Wnuk and Scott Snoop, a closely packed fourth and fifth. At 2 minutes, 0.681 seconds for six laps, James Hart's Junior heat win was easily the fastest of the night, but because the semi he won was redflagged, he had less choice of a starting spot. He chose the third from the inside pole where the loose limestone appeared to offer little traction, but he ' was able to get to move into first exiting tum two before being briefly passed by Clint Vahsholtz. On the Eric O 'Bo yle (700) and his brother Douglas (160) finished 1-2 in Wedne sday's . Pro-Am final. Eric used hi s brother's backup Honda motor in the race. second lap , in turn two, Ha rt moved into the lead arid quickly pulled away. Vah shol tz was passed exi ting turn four two la ps later, J ohn Ressotaking over second , a nd th e top three were set. Patrick Behrle was second at the halfway point before dropping out two laps from th e end giving th e spot to George Garris with Jeff Eklund taking fifth. "The motorcycle wa s working perfect," Hart said. " Mar li n Hart (his uncle) built th e motor. T he o n ly trouble I had was pushing the front end in one, otherwise it was working real good ." Vahsholtz said Resso was able to pass hi m in the middle of the corner becau se, he said, " there was kind of a sli ck groove 'i n. the a pex and I - cou ldn 't get th e front tire to grab. I had to run the corners slow." t:N Results P·A FINAL: I. Eric O' Boyle (Ho n); 2. Doug las O'Boy le (Hon); 3. Kevin Varnes (H-D); 4. Chris Wnu k (Hon); 5. Scott Snoo p (W-R); 6. Ned Storm (Ho n); 7.
