Russell rode his brand new Muzzy Kawasaki ZXR750 to a runaway win over th e T eam Hammer Suzuki GSXR750 of Britt Turkington and the seco nd Muzzy Kaw asaki ridden by Can adi an J acques . Guenette in th e o pening round of th e AMA/CCS 750cc Supersport Series. With the top three locked into their fin al fin ishing positions by the end of th e first lap, the real focus of the 750q : Su persport race switch ed to the newl yformed T op Expert progr am, a sort of race within a race for CCS Expert li cen se h o lder s a n d fir st yea r p rofessionals. It was Macon , G eorgia 's T ri p p Nobl es wh o earne d the honor of being T op Expert by fin ishing fifth overall behind fourth- pl aced Gl enn Barry . E 20 Su rprisingly, Nob les pulled off the feat whi le riding a Honda CBR600 F2, a tribute to both his riding talents and the compe titiveness of the new Honda. Nobles has a history of doing well at Daytona. As a No vice, he dominated the AMA/CCS Race of Ch ampions in 1989 on a Suzuki GSXR750, winning four classes. In 1990, Nobl es put his racing efforts into Harl ey-Davidson Twin Sport racing, finishing second in tha t Cycle Week race. . Sixth p lace and second Top Expert went to Mike Moor es on a Suzuki GSXR750 with fellow T op Experts Titian Bue, Gerald Rothman, Jr., J am es Schaefer and Pro Mark Ch in rou nding o ut the top 10 finis hers. Russell a nd th e new Kawasaki , though, were th e dominant for ce. The Georgian romped to a 11.260-second margin of victory, averagi ng 105.168 _ Britt Turkington settled into second on lap one and finished 1I seconds behind Russell. mph , slightly off the record pa ce set in the same clas s last year by Doug Chandler on a 1990 Muuy Kawasaki. The race was red-flagged on the opening lap when Ray Yoder, Jr. crashed exiti ng the Interna tional Horseshoe. On the restart , Turkington jumped out to a quick lead , bu t he was run down by the flyin g Ru ssell by the end of th e first lap. At tha t po int an y chance of a race for the lead ended. Guenette got a decent sta rt and ended the first lap in third pl ace, a good distan ce beh in d second-placed Turki ngton, though . G uene tte gai ned on the Suzuki rider th roughout the race, bu t never really threaten ed to take the runner-u p spot. " I had a prett y good sta rt, no t the best, bu t not bad ," th e young Canadian said. " I worked my way up to th ird and was catchi ng up slow ly to Britt. I guess he would have pushed harder if there were a few more lap s becau se I was closi ng up good. My bike worked fine. I'm real happy. I spe nt a few days here befor e the races ridi ng my motocross bik e and it helped o ut a good bit. It go t me in better sha pe than I was last year. Now, I can go a lot mor e laps wi tho ut havin g to slow do wn . I wish there were more laps in the final." Turkington averaged 104.205 mph in fin ish in g second beh ind Ru ssell : " I do n't know about keeping up wi th th e Kawasaki power-wise. bu t the rear suspension cha nges we made got us dialed in to where we could get the gas on soo ner. Exciting momen ts? Yeah, watc hing Scott blaze by me o n the tri-oval; that was pretty exciting. I tried to keep up with hi m as good as I could, but we need to come up with some more HP (horsepower) if we' re goi ng to keep u p with the Kawasakis. Like I said in the winner's circle, I feel we were the first street bi ke across the finish line." . T he rest of the season will likely be an uphill battle for those trying .to compe te against the new Kawasaki . Ru ssell , though , seemed bored by the wh ole thing. " I tr ied to make every ' Ia p fa st because I wanted to build a lead ," the subdued Russell sa id. " I didn 't want anything to to happen. I know how racing can be. It went real well. Our bike 's fast , We didn 't solve the problem we had yesterday with the front end pushin g and th at 's wh y the lap tim es weren' t that great." Wh ile the to p three were set from . the first lap on, the battl e for fourth went to the finis h. Bue held the spot ini tia lly ahead of No bles, but Barry came through to take over fourth on the fourth lap . Nobl es came with h im and those two event ua lly pull ed clear of the rest. At the finish , though, it was the more po werf ul Suzuki of Barry crossi ng the lin e in fourth.
