quick work of the field stre tch ing out to a 50-yard lead by th e fourt h lap and going on to win by mo re th an two and a half seconds. Brow used the same line in hi s heat tha t he'd used in q ualifyin g, dri ving deep into the cus hi on , sq ua r- . .ing it off, and driving do wn to th e exit. J ones ' techni qu e was m a rkedl y differ ent. " Riding the line I was riding, most rid ers get im patient and get in there too far ," Jones said. "A lot of guys have a hard tim e riding with me because they get impatient and want to gas it up." Watching Jones was deceptive. H e carried far less corne r speed than the others, but, by using a narrow arc, used far less of the track and was ted less time. But since the track was evolvi ng , and Jones' lin e didn 't work best until late in the n ight, he was o nly ab le to qualify ninth-fastest, not good enough for the Camel Challenge. Mo st of th e heat ra ce winner s, though, chose the mor e spectacu lar high line. Among them were Carr, Morehead, Brow , and Segedy, wi th Aseltine's line a com promise, workin g the m idtrack to th e th ird heat win, th e second fastest of th e program. It worked again in the Camel Challenge wh en he held off the determined Carr to the line. Graham and Duan e Veeder, in his first Camel Challenge along with Seged y, were third and fourth from th e penalty line with Segedy fifth and Brow las t. T erry Poovey had qual ified for th e Challenge, but blew up h is Daytona Budweiser-backed Harley in his heat. Seventh-fastest Segedy paid Poovey $500 for his spot, along wit h 50% of his earnings. " That's the first time I ever tasted 10 grand," Aseltine said o n the victory sta nd. "We're going to make some ch anges and get a couple of hundredths more ou t of the track." Aseltine would never find out if th e changes were effectiv e. Going into turn one at the stan of the fin al , he slid off the cu shion and nearly high-sided , before falling. H e quickl y rejoined th e pack and would finish 10th. . Ou t front, it wa s Carr leading Morehead wit h Bro w thi rd ahead of Segedy and Jones. By the fourth lap Carr had a ha lflengt h lead wi th Morehead ho ldi ng off Jones, Brow ahea d of Seged y wi th Dan In gram ahead of for mer cha m p io ns Graham and Sprin gsteen. As soon as J ones moved int o second, he began to close the ga p and there was a feeling that it was only a matter of time. The pa ss would co me exiti ng turn four ap proac hi ng th e halfway flags . A lap later and there was no question Jones would win. " I knew the cushion might work the first five laps, but not th e last five and that's when I would lead ," J ones sai d. Carr said he tried to ' foll ow J ones, but it didn't work. " I came down to the bottom and followed h im for one lap ," Carr began , " then I went back to where I was." After being briefly second, Mor ehead was moved back to th ird by th e sixth lap and would stay th ere, ho lding off a coup le of challenges. Fir st In gram made a run at him, cras hing in tu rn two on the 13th lap, and lat e in the race Segedy tried him, but th e veteran . held him off. " I was biding my time and trying not to run off the little black line," Morehead said. Segedy, who hails from Akron, Ohio, was ecstatic after making hi s fir st National, a race he near ly did n' t sta rt after Ricky Graham po inted out to him that his rear exhaust m ount was broken on the start line. Hasty repairs Two-time Grand National Champion Ricky Graham (3) finished sixth, Will Davis (21) seventh and Rich King (80) eighth. Ian Segedy finished a strong fourth in his first-ever Camel Pro NationaI. were made with safety wire and p lastic tie-wra ps and Segedy said he didn 't th ink about it unt il the race was over , thoug h he ad mitted he th ought there was no way it wou ld hold. It did and h e fini sh ed four th a head o f Sp ringsteen . Springs teen had gotten a bad start, finis hi ng the first lap in th e bottom five, befor e q u ickl y kn ifin g h is way , into the top half of th e 15-rider field . By the fourth lap he was stuck to Graham and wo uld pass him just after the halfway p oi nt. Never ab le to challe nge Segedy , he took fifth. "The race track was real sli ppery, more in the main tha n all day," Sp ringsteen said. " We had the fro m . end off three times , trying to ma ke it steer," he said, "and we tried de-tuning the engin e for the main because we ha d so much wh eelsp in." Graham , not kn ow n as a sho rt trac ker and in his fir st dirt trac k race since breakin g h is ar m at San Jose last year, was a content sixth wit h Wi ll Davis seventh, and Rich King eighth. Fast q u alifier Brow was never a factor, crashing in turns three a nd fou r, while well back in the pack. 0\1 Ga r vis Honda-sponsored Ronnie Jones acknowleges the fans..
