Californian Lairy Roeseler felt right at home amongst the manzanita bushes and dusty trails of Coalinga and he showed it by scoring the overall win at the Quicksilver National. Former National En duro Champion Kevin Hines made h is debu t appearance as a factory Suzuki pilot after .five years with KTM. Hines finished second overall. FEB. 17 a wa sa ki T eam G reen 's L arry Roeseler established himself as a force to be recko ned with in this year's race for the National Championsh ip Enduro titl e with the overall win at the Quicksilver National Enduro, the open ing round of the 1991 series. National titl e hopefuls sho wed up from all across the states to vie for early round po ints, but it was the Californ ian, Roeseler, who pulled out the win by one point over form er National Enduro Champion, Suzuki's Kevin Hines. The Quicksilver National was o n the brink of cancellation du e to lack of rain in the drought-stricken state, but the event carried on as scheduled. It was staged at the Clear Creek Recrea tion Area near Coalinga and .hosted by the Salinas Ra mblers M.C. " I wasn't going to go for the series," said the Kawasaki/Thor/Bridgestone/ Tsubaki/Bel- Ray/ Pro Circuit/ Renthal/Trick/Scott Goggles/Shoei/ Bar Snake/CTi Braces/Chiparoos-backed . Roeseler. " But it's possible Kawasaki will send me to the second one in Louisiana next month to see what happens. T o win a titl e would be very speci al to me. 1 have won Na tio nals before but never a titl e." . _ Riding on the thi rd minut e, A -class rider KTM 's Jimm y Lewi s, rrom California, was first to arrive at the gas sto p aft er mor e th an 40 miles of dr y, du st y, twi stin g tra i l sj lin ed with un yielding manzanita bu sh es and gna rly, rocky sectio ns th rough the moun tains. Hines, rid in g on the 21st minute and Roesel er , o ne minute behind him , fini sh ed the first loop of th e cou rse with o n ly fiv e p oints dropped ap iece. KTM 's J eff Russell, from Ohio , came in with seven po ints dropped, in sp ite of a slow-running odometer, whi ch mad e him late at a few checks. Also com ing in with seven points was Kawasaki 's Kurt Hough, who had som e problems with his front brak es in th e first sectio n. Local favorite Dave Bertram (eigh t points) had no serious problems with one particular check, just little problems
