The Daytona 200 is a uniq ue event a nd it has lon g cried for a book th a t chron icles its h istory. Th is is tha t book. It 's an indispensable treasure. Emde spent a year wri ti ng the tex t and co mp ili ng the phot os a nd sta tistics; it' s th e 83-pages of th e latter tha t make th e large-format pa perback book indispensable. Every rid er who co mpeted in th e 200 from its first runnin g. on the beach in 1937 to last year' s event at Daytona International Speedway is lis ted, as ar e year-by-year rundowns of the rider 's fini shing position, the brand of bike he or she rod e, a nd th e number of laps and miles logged. Other sta tistics include a list of the rid ers who have turned in th e most miles in the 200, a br eakdown of top fini shin g forei gn p arti cipants by nationality, and th e pole position rid ers over the year s. The maj o rit y o f the book, 194 pages, is devot ed to a histor y of th e 200 in the for m of a year-by-yea r loo k a t the race from its first runnin g on the 3.2mile beach cou rse th ro ugh las t yea r's event that ran o n the 3.56-mile co urse at Da yto na Intern a tional Speedway. The text is accom pan ied by o ver 300 p ho tos, many of them never befor e pub lished. Many came from private colle ctions, incl uding Em de's, wh ile o the rs ca me from so urces lik e the AMA, Pet ersen Publishing, and th e Speedway's arch ives. Like th e wealth of statistics, the phot os tella fascinating sto ry.
