"T here will be more actio n in front of th e Win ston T ower and grandstand areas alo ng the start-finis h line," says Bail ey, who has designed a nd built the Daytona Supercros s tra ck for 21 years stra igh t. "T he rid ers will get more ai r tim e off the jumps, and tha t will make the racing mor e spec tacu la r for the fan s. We've changed several turns o n the co urse and we're using a clay base fo r parts of th e track whi ch sho uld provide bett er racing conditio ns." Bailey knows that a good start in creases a rider 's chance o f winning, but he feels that this year's co urse won 't doom those wh o ar en 't at th e front of the pack in the first turn. "A good rid er will be a ble to come from behind and sti ll win if he doesn 't make a gr eat start," claims Bailey. Bayle won his firstever U.S. National at Gatorback in 1989, the same event in which three: time 250cc National champ R ick Johnson suffered a serio us in jury to his right wrist that hampers him to this day.
