Dave Scofield and Tom Tucker scored in the first heat , and Do n Ru tledge and Don Burgess picked up the second heat win, findin g Kim Lyon s and Carl Co rne ll to be th eir o n ly cha lle ng ers. Keith Root and James Murra y took th e semi by at least a quarter o f the tra ck but c uldn 't repeat the performa nce in the final , especia lly a fter getti ng up close and perso na l wi th a snow bank. T he two heat win ners were well ma tched for the fin al , bu t Rutledge and Burgess held th e ad vantage a t the checkered £lag. Sco field and Tucker lost th eir advantag e once to Pau l Wingar. and Daniel Welch but rega in ed it in time to pick up seco nd. Wingar and Welch, how ever, lost the third p lace trophy to a last second stretch run by Lyo ns and Cornell. . Dan Diener and Gl en O 'Boyle diced it up with their H ondas in the first Senior40 8c Over class heat race. Dien er took th e early lead wh ile O 'Boyle was manuevering th rough heavy traf£ie. First he got by Merl yn Wertz, then he took the long way around J im Bauerlee . O 'B o yle turn ed up th e heat , passing Diener on lap fo ur and in creasing hi s lead to the fin ish lin e. Dan Crawford ma in ta ined a comfo rta ble lead o n the rest of the field in th e second heat wh ile Larry Piekos and Keith O 'Boyle went at it whee l-towh eel for second p lace. P iekos took secon d beh ind win ner Crawford at the line. J ohn Zweri can pull ed th e holeshot at th e sta rt of the semi and was never head ed. After run ning a ha rd race, Steve Wilson lost a start ing slo t in the final wh en his bi ke gave u p o n him just befor e the fin ish line. Wi lson 's mi sfortune gave Norman Gruber a shot at the titl e. Crawford repeated h is easy heat race . victory in the fin al , leaving Diener and O 'Boyle to stage a rematch of their hea t race duel. Just after the wh ite £lag came out, Dien er took over seco nd and O 'Bo yle foun d himself fig hting off th e advances of Pieko wh o wanted th ird. O 'Boyle lost his ad vantage to Piekos just as th ey carne un der the wire. The first Open Studded Solo class heat race was red-£lagged du e to an uneven start. On the resta rt it was James Hile pu lli ng the ho lesho t and settling into a lead tha t gave him some breathin g roo m for the firs t three laps. About th at time Dan Cross began taking it to the ou tside, pass ing Martin Mu rphy a nd going to work serio us ly on the gap H ile had o pe ned up. Cross was soo n breathing dow n H ile's neck and on th e white £lag lap pa ssed h im on the ba ckstretch and held h im off to tak e the win . . The second heat was also red-flagged wh en four riders went down just past turn two . T here were no reported injuries. T h e restart was dela yed , giving rid ers a few extra minu tes to try and stra ig hten th eir bi kes o ut as best they co uld. and o nly Tim Far rell couldn 't repair his bike in tim e to make it back on the lin e. On the restart, Dou g O 'Bo yle took co nt ro l of the race from the ins tant th e lig ht change d green. Lowe, Williams and Crawford battl ed for five laps coming down to th e wi re th ree abreast, with William s o nly hal f a bike len gth off the ot her two.
