Nine teen of th e best reserve Mari·nes from Oregon are now proudly serving t he Un ited St ates of Am erica in Operation Desert Storm. Among these few fin e men is a fellow hardcore motocrosser and one of m y best friends, And y " H itrna n" Kalz from Hillsboro, Oregon. And y and hi s un it were called up "in late December to go to Camp Pendleton, California, for three weeks of trai ni ng befor e shi pping over to Saudi Arabia. Andy called me fro m Camp Pendleton an d told me of the poor quality gogg les that were issued to them to use a broad. We thoug h t motocross goggles wo u ld be mo re comfortable and a lot mor e stylish , An dy went th rou gh h is ch a i n of comma nd and found o ut that he co u ld use goggles th at had black frames and straps. Wit h tha t information, I called Scott USA in Sun Vall ey, Idaho, and spoke to representative Sandra Ca u lkins. Sh e retu rned the call the next da y with the grea t news that th e firm 's vice president. Scott Watunabe, said it was okay to send the Mar in e uni t wh at th ey wan ted at deal er cos t. T wo da ys bef ore Andy' s unit shipped ou t, the goggl es arrived at m y place and I ship ped them to him overnight. H e received them the da y before they left for the Middle East. After receiving th e goggles, And y said , " We are now kno wn as th e Hollywood Marines fro m the sta te of O regon. Prett y rig h teous , huh?" On behalf of Andy and th e men in his un it, th anks to Sco tt and Sandra at Scott USA. Don Schneider Cornelius, OR Andy's Unl t IS not alone in wearing motorcycle goggles. The son of Miku ni's Lee Chapin is also involved in Operation Desert Storm and he and the fellow members of his lank crew and some friends are wearing motorcycle goggles, courtesy of JT . .. Editor. Privateer champions It's m y understanding that th e AMA's National dirt track program has been known as the Grand National Championship Series since 1954. Would you please list the riders who have won the series championship as privateers. By privateer, I mean a rider not sponsored by a motorcycle manufacturer. Eight years before he w ou ld win a second titl e as a BSA factory rider, Matchless and BSA-mounted Dick Mann was th e first privateer to win the coveted Number On e plate, doing so in 1963. S ixt een years later, in 1979, pr ivateer Steve Eklund cam paigned botb. Yamaha and Harley-Davidson dirt trackers and won the title . Mike Kidd won th e title in 1982 rid ing at first u nofficially [actorv -supported Yamahas and later in 'th« season Mert Launoill's Harleys. Finally, as a priuateer in 1983, R ick y Graham won the first of his Iwo Grand National Championship titles. Graham, w ho wenl on to win the title again in 1984 riding. factory-backed Hondas, rode T ex Peel H arleys 10 his [irst cham p ionship . . , Editor. . O verl ooked champ Your interview with National Cross Country Champion Scott Summers in the January 9 issue contained the "s tatement" again and I' ve decided to set the record straight once and for all. The statement I am talking about occurred in the Summers interview and I quote, " In the history of the National Cross Country Series , no one other than (Ed) Lojak had ever carried the number one plate." The fact is, in 1985 I won the series overall when it was called th e 100 Miler Series. I have the highest respect for Ed Lojak 's riding ability and the numerous championships he has won, but I saw th e statement " n ine cham p ions h ips in a row" one too many tim es to sit quiet an y lon ger, Gi ve credi t .wh ere credit is due, My sponsors in 1985 were Dirty Harry 's Dirt Bikes, KTM and Hi -Point Ra cing Products. By the way, co ngratu latio ns, Scott. Jim Maltba Grantsville, MD Malt ba is absolutely correct. L ojak broke h is leg dur in g th e '85 series and co n sis ten t p erforman ces earn ed Maltba th e ove rall titl e . . . Editor, Letters to the editor should be sent to: Voices, Cycle News, P,O.
