Ward tops Camp Coker MX' By Earl Walton SOCIETYHILL, NC, JAN. 6 uzuki factory rid er Larry Ward dominated bo th the 125 and 250cc Pro classes at the Camp Coker Motorsports Pa rk One-Track MX Series opener wi th across-the-board moto win s in bo th classes. Sunny skies and spring-like 7O-degree temperatures greeted the 300-plus riders and more than 1000 spectators to the Promo-T ech-promoted, AMA-sanctioned event. What greeted the racers and spectators on their arrival was a new mammoth four-tiered jump that towered above the track. The jump, according to designer-builder John Savitski ofStadium Dirt Designs, is the largest man -made jump in the world - larger than any ever built for supercross or motocross. "Thereare 250 l l-ton dump truck loads of clayin the jump," said Savitski. "That's about as m uch as we put on mos t supercross stadium floors." Nearly every participating rider stalked the jump beforepractice to determine how best to negotiate it Much of the pre-race chatterconcemed what Larry Ward would . do with the jump. That was answered in the first 250cc A moto. Ward came out of the gate third following holeshot grabber Kevin Walker and Mike Andrews. Walker dropped out of the moto on lap two with mechanical trouble and Ward quickly took the' lead, widening the gap between himself and Andrews to seven seconds at the halfway point At each encounter with the "super jump," Ward appeared to plot and calculate the next encounter. Starting with a clearance of the first two of its four stairstep levels on the first pass , Ward, along with the rest of the field, quickly progressed to level three. On the white flag lap and with a 14-second lead in hand , Ward flew to the top of the jump, almost clea ring even the fourth level, a feat which ended speculation and received a roaring ovation from the crowd. Ward went o n to win the moto with An drews seco nd and Chad Lo ugh nabbing third. The second moto produced the same results after Ward caugh t up to an d th en passed firs t Lough and then And rews at the halfway point. Kevin Walker battled wi th Ward in the first I25cc A rnoto, bu t on the white £lag lap War d too k the lead and rode on to victory. Lough took th ird wi th Andrews fourth. The second moto saw Ward pull th e ho leshot and he scored a commandin g victory with Walker once aga in second and Lough th ird.
