Lawrence lands Perris MX win PERRIS, CA, DEC. 22 Phil Lawrence tu rn ed th e ta bles on Mike Fisher to win th e 250cc Pr o class at GFI Ra cing ' s Super Saturday MX at P err is Raceway. In the first moto, Fisher worked hi s way by Rex Staten and then caught Gary Sem ics to ta ke over the lead o n the second lap . Fisher th en cru ised o ut fro n t for the remaini ng eigh t la ps lO cla im the rn o to win. Lawrence' mo ved up to second a lap after Fishe r had ta ken the lead, bu t he cou ld n' t gain any ground and finis hed a few seconds behind the factory KTM pilot. Sta ten he ld on to third a fter th warting strong challenges from Chris You ng, wh o wa s beinl;: hounded by Will y Musgrave at th e fin ish line, Lawren ce grabbed the holesh ot at th e start o f th e second moro and rode unch allenged to the checkered flag . Fisher spent two laps behind Andy Grider, and by th e ti me he took over seco nd Lawrence was out of reach. Grider dr op ped back to eis h th wh ile Greg Ziuerkopf cruised a lo ne to finish th ir d ahead o f Russ Wageman a nd Musgrave. T he first I25cc Pro class mota featured some wild action. Joel Albrecht, Tommy Clowers and Young were lock ed in tight ba tt le for th e lead ear ly in the In-lap race. At th e end o f six th lap Clowers fell, had trouble res tar ti ng and retired from th e mota. Young the n hounded Albrecht until th e leader fell at the beginning o f the last lap. But mo men ts lat er You ng crashed hard, and Albrech t was back in the lead. Cra ig Ca no y was ri ght on his tail, but Albrecht held him off to win the mot a . Ca noy led ear ly in the second mota wh ile Albrecht held second u nt il Clowers passed him o n the third lap. As the pack sorted itse lf o ut, McCormick and Ken WIn ston broke away and began a motolong battle for the lead in the 250cc Intermedi at e cla ss. At th e co mp letio n of lap o ne Doug Sch weizer attemp ted a block pass o n Breihan, but the pass didn 't work o u t and th e . two riders hit and went down hard. Sch weizer was slow in ge tti ng up. and Breih an retired for the day with an in jured elbo w and a severed front brak e line. With Brei han o u t o f th e way, Crosby took co m mand of the first p lace position In the Vet In termedi a te division followed by Gary Sco tt. O n lap three Scott slid out and went do wn on the slippery track. As th e moto wound down, it turned into more of a survival test with the riders holding their positions. At the checkered flag it was Crosby with the wi n over Mike Jo nes a nd Gary Scott. In the 250cc class, McCo rm ick held on for the win follo wed by Wi nsIOn and Robert Failing . In rno to two it" wa s Crosby o ut in fro nt fo llo wed by Scott a nd Jo nes, and th e positio ns wer e set for the entire m o to, Crosby too k the mota and the overall win with Scott and Jones close behind.
