Ulven held second for the enti re race wh ile New Mexico 's Shawn Morga charged fro m seventh to finish th ird. Ulven bri efly led the second mo to until Easley swooped past him and opened u p a 10-second lead. But near th e en d Morga m o unted a fier ce charge, first nudgin g Ulven out of . second then mak ing a last-lap pass o n Easley for the win . " I wasn 't prepared for Morga," said Easley. " I was cru ising ou t fro nt and didn't notice the pit board until it was too late." , Morga made his lon g jou rn ey pay off with a win in division one 'of the l25cc Intermediat e class. Morga trail ed Steve Drew in the first rnot o until he made a last-lap pass for the win. Billy Felts led the start of moto two, but Morga pi cked up the lead by the second lap a nd went unchallenged until the final lap. Tha t's whe n Sp ud Walters scra mbled by Drew and Felts then closed on Morga. Walters applied heavy pressure whi le Morga tried to hold h im off. T he two raced sho u lder to sho ul der to the checkered flag with Morga win ni ng by a hair. David Lynch grabbed the holesho t in the first Vet Int ermediate Division I moto and never loo ked back until he crossed the fin ish line in first place. Don Leib con tro lled second followed by Fred Nicho ls and Dave Sarian. Dan Scharf led the second moto with J oh n Adams, Lynch and defending class cha m p Brian Kurth in tow. Leib and Sarian were invo lved in a secondturn pil eu p and both rid ers started at the back of the field. At the ha lfway point Lynch was out fron t with Leib and Sar ian successfully charging to second and th ird wh ile Kur th dropped out with a broken cha in and Scharf faded. Sari an reeled in Lynch lat e in the race but couldn't make the pass and finished second in front of Leib. "The pileup reall y cost me, but I passed about 12 riders and almost had Lynch but time ran out," said Sarian. Robert Sheldon took advan tage of the Yamaha YZ Buck contingency program and North County Yamaha's double YZ buck program as he earned $2000 YZ Bucks for winning the Vet Intermediate Division II, 25-29 Novice Division I and 250cc Novice Division I classes and fin ish ing th ird overa ll in the first division of the 125cc Novice class. Sheldon won six motos an d was un challenged in a ll but the 125cc Novice class where his streak was ha lted by J erry J etton. Jetton gra bbed the lead a t the start of the first l25cc Novice Division I mot o wit h Eric Wright p ushi ng hard from behind. Wrigh t h it Jetton's rear tire and went do wn , givin g J etton plenty o f breathing ro om to th e checkered flag . Mike Mount, Oscar Ancheta, David Chase and Sheldon rounded out the top five. Wright exploded into the lead at the start of moto two while Kelly Poor and Jetton argued over second early in th e race ahead of Tim Olson. On the final lap Wright lost control and gave th e lead and win to Poor. Olson tangled . with Jetton on the final lap and moved past him to claim second while Shel- . don finished fourth . Grant Gaspar gunned down the competition with a four-mote sweep of the second divis ions of the 125 and 250cc Novice classes. 11 Petchel led early in both l25cc Novice motos but surrendered th e point to Gaspar. As Gaspar built up huge leads Petchel rode unchallenged in second. World J erem y McGrath (125) passed Johnson on th e fin al lap of the 250cc sup ercross race and held him off to finish second. T allony ohland (19) crashed in turn on e in the 125cc Invitational Supercross, but charged through the pack to earn th e win . Mountain Bike cha mp Greg Herbold tried hi s hand a t motocross and wound up third. Nick Morgan led th e early part of the first 250cc Novice Division I moto until he bobbled in a tum and Gaspar took control. Gaspar scored a landslide victory while Morgan held off a lat erace charge by Nick Athans to secure second. In moto two , Gaspar and Morgan hammered at each other until the final lap when Gaspar made a cunning pass in a deep set of ruts. Morgan tried to regain th e lead in the remaining turns but lapped rider s hampered hi s efforts . Sten Rasmussen didn 't win a rnoto, but hi s consistency paid off with the overa ll win in th e second division of the 125cc Beginner class. Bobb y Navarro led the start of rnoto on e wi th Bill y Clifton , Ray Bowers a n d Armando Overland in pursuit. Both J oey Cirocco and Rasmussen sta rted p oorl y but were sw ift ly cutt ing throug h the pa ck. In th e lat e stages of the race Cirocco passed Bowers and Clifton then closed to lead er Navarro's back fender. Cirocco's charge was cut short by the checkered flag and he fin ished second behind Navarro, while Rasmussen capped off a last-lap pass on Clifton to claim third. Navarro maneuvered to the front of th e second moto but fell in a deep rut on the .second lap. Wayne Hunter inherited th e lead and ran with it to th e finish line, but his sixth-place finish in moto one left him third overa ll. Ra smussen worked on Erik J acob us and was rewarded wi th a pa ss on the fast back straight to clai m se~ond, which was good for the overall Wtn. Chris Corum topped the first division of the Vet Novice class after two lengthy bat tles with J im Hale. Hal e pulled the hol eshot in th e first moto with Corum second ahead of Del Ocheltree. Hale's 250 conti nua lly outp ow ered Corum's 125 down th e straights, but Corum would close in and dog Hale in every turn. This lasted throughout th e moto until Corum found a way past on the last lap and claimed the win. In the second rnoto it was Hale pursuing Corum. The two were never more than a bike length apa rt and easily left the field behind. Corum bobbled on the last .Iap , but Hale wasn't able to cap ita lizeon the mistake and finished beh ind Corum. Bobby Brackens led most of the first Vet Novice Division III rnoto but crashed in a rut near the finish line. J eff Youn g II
