v 0ICES Lettersto the editor T ragedy in Michigan I am wri ting this letter to relate a terrible catas trophe involvi ng someone who has given so much to the motorcycle com mu nity. On December 7, Mark and Michelle Mor eland, who own and opera te Mor eland 's MX Park in Stanton , Michigan, lost their two oldest daughters, Ho lly and Kerr y, in a drownin g accident. Their son , Grant, who was also involved in the accident, was hospi talized in cri tical condition bu t was released in time to be ho me for Christmas. The Morelands have been promot· ing racing for over two decades spanning two genera tio n s. T he entire famil y helps on race day, wit h Mark's father working the ga te, always gree ting everyo ne wi th a sm ile and wish ing them a good tim e. Michelle and Mark 's sister , Charlen e, ha ndles th e tedi ous job of sign -up, scorin g and the presenting of th e awards. Mark tries to mak e every _race exciti ng wi th his anno u ncing and track prep aration. And wh o can lorget Mrs. Morel an d's fantastic home coo king at the concession sta nd. Not to ment ion all the o the r friends and relatives that help with scori ng, flagging, starts. etc. It 's a fami ly effort with everyone working to make it the best weekend it ca n be. The Morelan ds hav e dedicated th eir lives to makin g the sport we a ll love more enjoyable, now we have th e opportunity to repay them for some of the happiness that they gave to us. As always , the cost of med ical care is astronomical , therefor e, we sho uld tr y to ma ke a sizeabl e contribution to hel p this fami ly thro ugh this dr amatic tim e. ' Cards, letters and don ations for the family may be sent to Mark and Mich ell e Moreland, c/o T h e Dirt Works, 5290 Alp in e Ave., Comstock Pa rk, MI 49321. Peter B. Mason Belmont, MI A benefit race was held at Baja A cres in Mill in gt on , Mi ch igan , th e week after th e accident and over $8500 was raised for th e Mor eland fam ily. Everything required to run th e race was donat ed , including th e am bu lance service and food and beverages. Most of th e local shops donated accessories which w ere raffled off and riders such as Jeff Stanton and Damon Bradshaw donated riding g ear that w as auctioned . . . Editor. -Dirt biker heaven I met (associate editor) Nate Rauba at the Motocross des Nations at Ga ildorf , West Germany. I got sent to Operation Desert Shield from German y and I didn 't have tim e to arrange for Cycle News delivery, bu t I still had -N ates business card (wit h yo u r address) in my wallet. It 's pretty boring here. All we do is work on the £l ying war mach ines no wom en , parties or dances allo wed. If we had a couple' of KX250s o r CR250s we could sky a few of these awesome sand dunes. T hese ca mel jockeys don 't kn o w what ' they 're missin g. I mean it' s wide open here - dirt biker heaven. I wo uld li ke to know if Cycle N ews would support the bik er flyers of the U.S. mil itary over here wit h an issue or two. All we get is militar y rag s and Arab newspapers. We would at least know what 's happening in the bi ke world we on ce knew. Please, I' ll pay you guys back someday , bu t today we need you ! Sgt. J ohn E. O'Brien A Co . 8/158 Avn. 12th Avn. Bde.' Operation Desert Shield APO, NY 09849 We trust th e receip t of th e newspapers we sen t you he lp ed brighten th e holidays, Sarge . . . Editor. The champ says, "Move over! " I am wri ting to express my th oughts abou t a problem that arises in National Hare Scramble s and Cros s Country Series co m peti tio n. G enerally , Na ti ona l AM Asanctioned events draw between 200 and 600 com petitors.Because the sport seems to be gro wing , the num bers increase year ly, making traffi c more and more of a problem at th ese events. I'm not opposed to growt h, in fact, I' m glad to see new people get ti ng inv ol ved in o ur spo rt. How ever, 'I wou ld like to ha ve a genera l understan d ing with my competitors concerning passing . I think I can speak for severa l of th e top com pe ti tors by po inting out that on a tight course, lapp in g riders and how well it is don e can decide wh o wins and wh o does n't. I'm not suggesti ng that we do anyt hing just to ben efit the top riders, bu t I th ink we should have a system of passi ng wh ich would make racing safer for everyone. From now on, wh y don 't we ackn o wledge a faster rider by moving over to the right and lettin g him pass on th e left. I realize this won 't always be possibl e but by always attempt ing thi s I think we can avoid severa l collisio ns. Exe cu tive Secre tary to the Pub lish er letter in the J an uary 9 issue; Joe is correct in sayi ng tha t the Bakersfield Racers Associa tio n has a grea t crew, bu t is sadly mi sta ken in saying they have a grea t track. Abo ut 10 years ago, whe n flat track was popu lar , the Bakersfield Speedway was sometimes a good, fast and tacky track. These days, motor cycles-ar en 't as im po rta nt as th e car races so track preparation suffers for us. If th ey get enough water on the ova l, the track is great co me main even t tim e. But that o nly happen ed once all year. I would like to know wha t happened to Airport Spe edway in Portervill e. (It was) a great cus h ion half mile, onethird mile, IT and MX track. The land was purchased and th e facility bu ilt with Green Sticker money and it has now laid dormant for . two years. Did we get th e shaft on th is too? I've raced dirt track for over 20 years. My sons are now taking over for me. Are they go ing to have a pl ace to race wh en they are big eno ugh to race 750s? I hope so. And j oe, it's Bob Van Meter, not Van Demeyer. Paul Cates Bakersfield, CA According to Bi ll " Big T im e" Sp encer, everyone's man-an -the-scene in north ern California, th e land Port erville Sp eedway occu pies was in deed purchased w ith m oney from the Green St icker fu nd. " T he Land fam il y and th e Port ervill e Sp inners M.C. hosted th e motorcycl e races," Sp en cer said.
