The Suzuki II OO;mo unted Floridian grabbed the lead fro m the start, and stayed out front for the first two laps till Britain's T revor Na tio n on the JPS Norton blas ted past. But whe n the N orton engine over heated, and locked up, Jacks was o n han d to head the pac k again. This time the youngs ter set the pace for two more laps, till he was caught, and passed by Sco tsman Steve H islop and German Peter Rubano (a WOl Yama ha) . J acks kept o n cha rg ing, th ou gh , and it took Yorkshireman Dave Leach, o n the 750 Mitsu Yam aha, three more laps to catch and pass him. But I felt good going into the second leg. and some ho w I figured I was riding for my co untry. and wanted 10 sho w the people we were not a bunch of wimps." said Jacks aft er the race. No one cou ld accuse Jacks or fellow American Kurt Hall of doing that. H all. wh o swit ched hi s wedd ing daie to mak e th e meeting. and who had brought his new wife with him for a honeymoon with a difference, was ano ther revelation. H all stag gered the Macau regulars by holding fourth place until th e fourth 'la p of the ope n ing race on hi s GS XRIIOO. Th en Robert Dunlop passed him on th e JPS Norton. and a lap lat er Dave Leach "went by. But lappin g at a steady. and impressive 2:42. Hall stayed in sixth until he was joined by J acks. who was down in 19th p lace on the o peni ng lap. By th e end of th e 15 laps . Jacks had clinched sixth place, and was 3/10ths of a second behind Ull sterman Phillip McCallen . with Hall seven th, less than four seconds down. H all . unlike J acks. started slowly in the next outing, though. but climbed D stea dily to fin ish eigh th. after a great race-long battle with TT specialists J oey Dunlop and Ni ck J efferies. Hall took seventh place overall. Mark Chin mi ssed th e first race. waiting for a clip-on to be welded, and fin ished j us t two laps in the second leg. Michael Barnes. making his Macau debut, ws 18th in the first race, then quickened his pace to take 15th spot in race two. But Danny Roberts. a lasrm in ut e replacem ent for Canadian J acques C eneue, bl ew h is Suzuki engi ne in practice, and had a gas leak in the spare eng ine loaned from Jacks. Overall victory went to Britain 's Steve H islo p , bu t on ly by .99 second from Peter Rubatto. Rubano won the first leg, chased hom e by H islop and Leach . Just 2.22 seconds separated the two. In race two. H islop bro ke clear to look set for an easy win . but Rubatto set a new lap record at 2:36. 14 as he cha sed H islop hom e. And when the Fl yin g Sco tsma n was ' slo wed by a mobile ch icane in the form of two Japanese rider s o n th e final lap, R ub atto was able to close the gap to little mor e th an a second.
