Gosselaar soars to Sunrise Motocross win By Tony Alessi Mat Bateman captured the 250cc Novice class win at Sunrise motocross. Back on the track after being sidelined for most of the summer, Patrick Greer captured the 125ccC class win and placed second in the Schoolboy class at Silver Creek MX. Greer grabs Silver Creek MX win By Barbara &: Loren Williams MORGAI\'TON, NC, NOV, 4 ver have one of your fondest dr eams come tru e? Imagine a cris p autumn da y graced by golden sunshi ne, and a tig ht little track with great dirt and j us t enough technica l stuff 10 make it fun . This lilli e gem is set in the North Carolina hills, ami d hard woods with leaves so brilliant they mak e your eyes hurt. The riders ga thered here for the th ird ro und of Aaron Bollinger' s Silver Creek Fall Series were read y to put on some Ilatout raci ng. Practice laps heighten the anticipation, and then Patrick Greer flashes by. Patrick Greer?! The young Honda pilot from Taylorville, North Carolina, was a fast kid who usually finished in the top five wherever he raced. At a Loretta Lynn 's qualifying race in June, every mother's nightmare struck when Patrick crashed hard .going over a jump and was oui lik e a light. In fact, he was in a coma for over a week. After Patrick regai ned consciousness and got some streng th back, he spe nt the rest of the su mmer in rehabilitati on. Hi s paren ts were trying not to get their hopes too hi gh , tell ing th em selves th ey'd be happy if he cou ld just regain normal function s. Wh ile hospi tal ized, one of th e firs t things he said was , " I want to race again ," but no one serio usly thou gh t tha t was possi ble. In the fall , Patrick returned to school in the ninth gra de with th e rest of h is class, and enrolled in adva nced classes as hi s eig h th- g ra de tea ch ers had recommended in the spring. At the end of the first quarter, he brought home one B in geometry and As in all the rest of hi s subjects. He suffers no ill effects from his head injuries, and according to his ph ysician ha s no greater chance of gelling hurt now than any other MXer. In th e first Schoolboy molO, Greer was second to turn one behind William Wilson , who leads the class so far for the Fall Series. Wilson ran up the hill like a scalded cat, leaving the mor e cautiou s Gr eer to hold off second-p lace series con tender J ason Bridgeman. Thou gh Wilson put a fair amount of distance on the rest of the field , Greer acq uilled himself well in the first molO E 6 of his second comeback race, fini shing a convincing runner-up. Greer tip toed th rough the first turn aga in for the combined 125cc BIC contes t, ending up behi nd B-riders Mike Milem and Byron Hager, and Cclass lead er Paul McDan iel. Sti ll bei ng carefu l, he rode a safe and sane, but still secu re, second in the I25cc C class, un willing to take a cha nce to pass McDan iel , who bro ught home th e rno to win. Whi le the secon d Schoolboy moto was virtua lly a carbo n copy of th e first, with Greer finishing second to Wilson for th ose placings in th e ove ra ll, Greer 's othe r 125cc moto tu rned ou tquite differently. From the sna p of th e band, th e spectators could begin 10 see signs of his earlier rh ythmic riding style, as he settled into th ird pl ace in th e co m b i n ed pack. On ce a gain Milem , the B winner, and McDaniel were ahead, and this tim e perennial C class threat and I25cc C series leader Terry Ware passed Josh Dombrosky and made a challenge 10 Greer from behind. On the early part of lap thr ee, McDaniel's Suzuki got a bit squirrely go ing up the hill, and Greer saw hi s cha nce. " I thou ght, if I was go ing to pass him , I'd better go ahead and do it," said G reer. " I won 't get any faster if I do n ' t try." For the rest of th e rn oto , alt houg h he cou ldn 't catch Milem , he successfull y held off the rest of the field to win the 125cc C class. Ware slipped around McDaniel on lap three , taking Dombrosky along for the ride and relegating McDaniel to fourth for the moto and second overall. From these fin ishes, Ware maintained h is sizeable series lead, and Dombrosky cemented hi s second-place series placing. Accepting hearty congra tu la tio ns for a super beginning to hi s co meback, Patrick sported a ·grin as bi g as h is goggles as he clutched hi s first -place trophy. When his dad was asked if they'd be racing in the next few weeks, he grinned. " Well, we don 't want to rush things ," he said. " Besid es , Patrick's grandparents are coming for a visit and they don't know yet that but -next year he's back to racing. O¥ will be fun !" Results 50: Cra ' Childs (Han); 2.
