Amon g the U.S. delegates were AMA President Ed Youngbl ood and Profession al Racin g Special Projects Man ager W.A. " Bill" Boyce, each of whom successfu lly sought new elected terms as FIM officers, Youngblood was re-elected to a thr ee-year term as an FIM Vice President and member of the FIM's Man agement Council. Boyce was voted to a three-year term as a member of th e FIM T rack Racing Commission . Several developments of importance to motorcycle spo rt in the Uni ted States were ra tified at the Budapest Congress. ·The FIM General Assembly approved the ap p lica tion of the AMA to host the 1992 FIM Congress in Columbus, Ohio. This will mark the first tim e th e world governing body for motorcycle sport has convened its Con gress in North America , and will coincide with festivities in Columbus commemora ting the 500th anniversary of th e continent's discovery by Christopher Columbus. -The following World Championship dates for 1991 even ts to be held in the Un ited States were confirmed. April 19-21: Road Race Grand Prix, 25Occ, 500cc and sidecar Laguna Seca Racewa y, Monterey, California. June 7-9: World Superbike Series Brainerd International Raceway, Brainerd, Minnesota July 13-14: 250cc Motorcross Grand Prix UnadiIla VaIley Sports Center, New Berlin, New York August 24-25: 500cc Motocross Grand Prix Glen Helen OHV Park, San Bernardino, California .Pending completion of circuit improvements req uested by _ FIM by December 31, 1990 _ ·The FIM General Assembly approved a plan aimed at eventual equali zation of the cost of organizing grand prix events on a worldwide basis. Under that plan, the organizers of each road race grand prix held in Europe will contribute approximately $25,000 to a fund to help defray the added costs borne by nonEuropean organizers. That amount will double in 1992. In the meantime, FIM . will take steps toward a centralized travel coordinator for variou s world championships. This plan was developed by a -committee of FIM Vice Presidents chaired by AMA's Youngblood. Although it will initiaIly be applied only to road race grand prix events , the long-term goa l is for establishment of a common econo mic system for all FIM World Championship programs. Ascot Park's Chris Aga janian made what he caIled a " bittersweet first and last" announcement last week concerning the Int e rnat ional Long Track S peedw a y N a tional Ch amp io n s hip meet that will take pl ace on November 9 at Ascot in Gardena, Californ ia. The event will be a " first" in th at for the first time ever speedway racers from what was East Germany prior to the recent unification wiIl race on th e legendary Ascot half mil e oval. They'll be takin g on th e lik es of England's Jeremy Doncaster and a host of American s, including Mike Faria , th e new Nat ional Ch ampion, and former National Champion Bo b b y Schw artz. The event wiIl be a " last" in th at the race will be th e last AMA motorcycle race held at Ascot. The race track site is schedu led for development followin g the conclusion of this racing season.
