Taking co m ma nd of second was Nick Costello, wi th Ron Fishe r movin g into thir d. Fisher dogged Costello for two laps until he powered by o n th e Carlsba d Freewa y sectio n. No bod y co uld touch Nunes as he cruised to the rnoto win by over 25 seco nds , followed by Fisher a nd Cost ello. Moto two again saw G ary Sco tt grab th e holesh ot, but Nunes wou ld not be deni ed as he powered into th e lead . A battle for second again ens ued , with SC ge tti ng pressured by O\t Gonzales, un til Go nza les tried an o utside pa ss that sen t him to th e gr ound. After two laps th e o rder was Nu nes, Sco tt , Cos tello, Crawfor d and Fisher. Fisher turned uf th e wi ck and within two laps had co ntrol o the number two positi on. Still h urting from a three-bike pileu p last month that left a nin e inch scar on his back , Bobb y Russell celebrated hi s 30th birthday with an o vera ll win in round seven o r th e Am erican Desert Racing Associati on 's Cha m pi onship Seri es in Rocky Point, Mex ico. Russell scored hi s seco nd overall win ever in near ly a decade of racing with th e ADRA against seem i n g ly insurmountabl e o dds . Before th e race Ru ssell pl edged to go slow and pick up some points while arch riva l Tim Abril was prepared to tak e th e raceaway from Ru ssell. At th e star t. Russell ro lled first while Abril spun his rear tire in th e deep beach sand which comp rised the 25-m ile course. Russell an d Abril diced heavil y until Abril took a wron g turn and Russell follow ed him for a p proximately ha lf a mil e. Cra ig Co nnor assumed th e lead and was close ly follo wed by Destry Abbott until Abbott ran ou t of gas o n hi s KTM 250 within sight of the pits. Abbott pushed hi s bik e until he go t gas and resu med raci ng well behind Co nnor. By th e time Abrill and Ru ssell returned to th e co ur se, the en ure Ama teur class had passed them. Rain fell just after the co mp letio n of th e heat races and forced the cance llatio n of th e finals. As per AMA rules, fin al points were awa rded acco rding to heat fin ishes. Fletch er won th e fastest of th e three O pen Expe rt heats , giv ing him th e o vera ll wm, Duane Veeder was awa rded second place by virt ue of hi s win in th e second fastest heat. Alt hough Fletcher has o ne mor e wi n than Veeder, Veeder ho lds a com manding 43 point lead over Fletch er for th e class district cha mp ionsh ip.
