Speedway for the Ann ual East Coa st Speedwa y Championship. Q ual ifyin g heats o pened on Friday night with a 32-rider field that was reduced to 15 sem i finalists and two reserves. The 16th spot was taken by Warren Diem , who was au tomatically seeded in the sem is by virt ue of his 1989 National victory a t Actio n Park East. Tom Burge, J ohn Lewi s, Len ny McBride and T u ff McBride emerged th ro ugh the qualifiers' as th e only underfea ted ri ders entering th e semi fin al s o n Saturday nigh t. . T he all-Scratch sem i program called for each rider to ride against each o ther and each from a differen t ga te position . T hrough round fou r on ly Blendzall/ Di em ' s CycIe/ R a ct eck-spcinsored Diem and T u ff McBride were un beat en and appeared to be assured of a berth in the fina l four. Heat 17, however, was a determ inin g ride for three riders tied wit h IO points as Burge, Lewis and Lenny McBride went head to head for two of the final fou r p osi ti ons. Burge be at Kevin Rubio, Lewis and McBride for the lead in and o u t of tu rn one an d two. McBride pulled alongsid e Burge o n the back straigh t and stayed there until th e last lap befor e ga ining a ' bike length lead and the victory. Burge, however, needed second to advance to th e finals. Lewis' third elim inated him from the fin al s wh ile Rubio took fourth. Heat 20, the last of the semis, pitted Diem and Tuff McBride, who were already assured of a spot in .the final , in a showd own event. McBrid e took an early lead and the win that gave him the distinction of going without a loss for the entire qual ifyin g and semi events. But th e real distinction was yet to t ome as Burge, Diem , and the two McBrides prepared for th e final four races th at would determine the East Coast Champion. Burge go t the early lead in the first final with Tuff McBride second and Diem third down the back stretch . Diem took a high line to go around McBride exit ing turn four and closed on Burge. Staying high, Diem got pa st . Burge for th e lead en teri ng lap three and left McBride battling Burge for second which he too k on the front R ·16 straight while Len ny McBride went to third on th e last cir cu it. Fin al number two was nearly identical to the first wit h Diem taking th e victory while the McBrides switched fin ishing p os i tio ns with Len ny McBride taking secon d, T u ff third and Burge fourth. A win in the th ird final would guarantee .Diem the cha m pionship , and he took the lead off turn one. H owever, T~ff McBride drove pa st hi m down th e back chu te and had the lead coming ou t of turn four. McBride had victory in sig ht until la p three wh en Diem, o n th e inside , m ad e contact with McBride wh ich too k him to the wall and gave Diem the lead a n d th e vi cto ry to wrap u p th e cha m pionsh ip. Wit h Diem alrea dy" holdin g the ti tle, fina l number four was run only for fini shi n g positio n . Tuff McBri de q uickly took the lead and held it to the checkered flag, giv ing him second o vera ll. Lenny McBride notched the third spot and Burge finished fourth . Diem had been tied with Cal ifornian Gene Woods wi th th ree East Coast N ati onal ti tl es each, and Diem ' s victor y gave him an unprecedent ed four Nationa l Cha mpionships. eN Results FINAL: I.
