SUPERCROSS Production class came 10 a boil in the fourth hour. Motion Systems Racing had a three-second lead over Honda of Niles at the halfway point, but an hour later the two teams crossed the line side by side - a dead heat after four hours of racing! . Rodden had just taken over for Fenwick and was pushing the H RT Yamaha hard in the fifth hour in an effort to catch the leaders. On his second lap, though, Rodden hit a bump at the apex of tum seven and crashed. He jumped up from the crash unhurtv feeling good enough to give the cornerworkers a verbal lashing for not havi ng the crash truck on the scene to pick up the disabled bike. Rodden was later fined for h is action s. The HRT Yamaha was brou gh t back to the pits, but by the time the crew made. the necessary repairs they had lost about 25 laps and ended up finishing 28th overall. In the final h our, RKN Racin g experienced yet another mechanical failure on their Yamaha FZR600. The team of Robert Nutt, Billy Eisenacher and Mike Reed had gotten all the way up to fourth overa ll during the fifth hour before the bike's motor gave up. Team Machine then took over the Mediumweight Superbike class lead. Machine credited their win to running a mostly-stock FZR600. The battle between Honda of Niles and Motion Systems Racing came down to the wire. In the final minutes Honda of Niles secured the class championship by holding off Motion Systems by half a lap. Taking advantage of H RT's prob- lems was Hall N' Still , moving up to finish second and securing a ' class championship title with the Indy win. Team owner Jim Still said the goal for next year would be the overall title. TBA Racing an d T BAII fin ished only 27 seconds apart in the race for third. TBA's Ward Cook said there were no team orders for his two teams. "I told them to go out and do the best they could. We just got lucky today and everything went our way," said Cook. Team Suzuki won the race with an average speed of 77.91 mph. At that pace they certainly would have broken an IRP mi leage record had it not been for 01 the 4O-minute red flag delay. Both went down, causin g another red flag and restart . On the third start, they were even off th e line. In tu rn thr ee, Christian went down and Lu cero .laid it do wn for him. That caused yet an other red flag and an other restart. The tension was so th ick you needed a cha in saw to cut through itl T he fourth try p roved 10 be the char m. It turned into th e best four laps of racing in quite a few years at Costa Mesa. Hamill bested Christian into turn one and had the lead. Christian dove into turn three and almost wrestled first away, but Hamill held him at ba y. Christian continued to hound Hamill unti l on the last lap Hamill opened up a slim lead which he he ld to the checkered flag. That secured th ird overa ll for Hamil l. Christian's second ' p lace finish made the runoff a reality. Faria won th e coin toss and chose gate two an d tha t automaticall y put Christian in four. The strategy was simp le. Christian had to make th e start or had to cu t back and try to com e under Faria. It was even easier for Faria. He had to make th e start. When th e ·tapes went up, Fari a got the best ga te a nd raced off the line. Christian cut to the inside in turn on e and tried to ' come in side th e slender leader. H e almost got alongside, but Faria had too much power and by turn three Faria was inching away. By the end of lap two, Fari a had a slim, but comfortable lead . On the last lap , Faria rea lized he had it in the bag. So did his legion of fans wh o screa med and pumped their fists when he blasted under the ch eckered flag with a five bike length ad vantage. Faria di smounted at the start/finish . line and was swept off h is feet a nd tossed into the air. A couple of minu tes later, he broke off a video crew's in terview when he saw sponsor Warren " Gra ndpa " Russell walk on to the track. " We did it ," screamed Far ia as he threw a bear hug on his main man.. " We did it !" A few feet away, the usually jovial Hami ll was not hi mself. "It is really tough to lose a Na tional tit le with an exclusion for the tapes," said Hamill. " All the way around the world you can n o t tou ch the tapes excep t -i n America. Not taking an ything away fro m Mike Faria. He was on it tonight and r have more respect for th e gu y then anybody. He deserved to win tonight. It was hi s night, but it is hard to swa llow right now ." Fari a was smi li ng from ear to ear. "It .will probab ly not sink in until r get that number one on the back of my leathers fin all y. Ever sin ce I pi cked up Warren (Russell) halfw ay through the season my dock has cha nge d 180 degrees. It has been non -stop winning ever sin ce." Asked if bein g number one would add an y extra weight, Faria said, " I h ope it add s a co up le of ex tra spo nsors and some extra weight to my walle t." Ch ristian smiled and sai d, " I am extreme ly ha p py with second p lace.. Mike rode a good race. If I couldri' t win it , I am g lad for Fari a. H e eN definitely deserved it." Resul ts 0 / A: I.
