J ohnson tried to keep Ward in sig ht a nd d id a resp ectabl e job o f it, alt hough he never seriously th reatened. But he did keep Ward th inking abo u t him. " Ricky really su rp rised me, he rod e rea l well ," said Ward. " I pulled o ut a little bit a nd sta rted relaxi ng thinking Rick wo u ld back o ff, bu t then he would start closing in a little bit, and I wo uld ha ve to wick it back up agai n." Ward mai nt ai ned abo u t a lO·second lead over J ohnson for most o f the race, whi le O 'Mara cruised a lo ne in th ird. Wa rd eas i l y to ok the win o ver Johnson a nd O 'M ar a, while Bowen finished a d istant fourth. McM ill en too k the checkered flag in fifth after passin g H onda-mounted Dean Ma tson la te in th e race. Matson held th e position for mos t o f the rnoto, but problems in th e fir st race rel egated him to 13th overall. Glued to Matson 's rear fender was Bo yesen , wh o was chased by Andrews a nd factory KTM rider Keith J ohnson. 125cc National Suzuki 's Buddy An tu ne z and Kawasaki rid er Brian Swink were th e two fron t-ru n ners in th e fir st l25 cc rnot o , but Tiche nor, Cooper a nd Kiedrow ski were ready to pounce. Ticheno r was th e first to make a move when he sl ip ped by bot h Swi nk and Antune z fo r . th e lea d . Antun ez press ured Ticheno r for a number o f laps bu t eventually dropped off the pace, as d id Swink. By th e six th la p, th e stage was set with T ich enor leadi ng the wa y o ver Cooper, Kied row sk i, Mat iasevich a nd LaRocco. , Two la ps la ter, Cooper's ri de came toUan abrupt end. "T here were th ese two doubles a nd it Jwas kind o f rock y," sai d 'Co oper. " I . hit th is o ne really big roc k a nd it kicked m y bike sideways. Later th a t lap I th ou ght I had pi nch ed a tube, beca use it was making nois es like th e rim was hitting th e rocks as if th e tire was flat. But lat er on, th e engine starte d grindin g. Wh at hap pen ed was, wh en I hi t that bi g rock, it sh eered the o il drai n bo lt a nd busted th e cases, so i t ra n ou t ofoil, It was n' t Suzu ki's fau lt ; may be you co uld bl a me me for try ing to double over th ose big roc ks. Lucki ly I have a no the r rno to to let m y fru stra tio ns ou t." While Cooper wa lked back to the p its, h is teammate Tich en or was still out in front, bu t by o n ly a few bike len gths over Kiedrowski with LaRocco n o w ru n ni ng th ird after p ass in g Mati asevich , T his o rder rem ained th e sa me until th e last la p when Kiedrows ki passed T ich en or and held on for th e win. ' ''I wa s rid ing reall y good until I hit midm o to lag a nd Kiedrowski started catch ing me," said Tich en or. " O n th e last lap, I made a co u p le o f mi stakes, he got ri ght up on m e a nd passed me on th e bottom of a hill. Coming down th e hill he j us t banzaied it. I knew he was o n th e in side, so I figured he was go ing to take m e over th e berm. So I slowed down to try and cut back on th e.insid e, but he had suc h a good drive comi ng out of th e corner at th e top o f the hill that I wasn 't even close. I was pretty mad th at I let it get aw ay after leading from th e secon d lap on. I'm dis appointed in myself. " " T he tra ck was a little slick at fir st so I just hung back and rode as clean as I co uld ," said Kied ro wski. " I caught up to Tichenor on th e last lap, go t on th e gas a little bi t more on th e inside an d pushed him over. H e almost got me back , but I had a little bit better of a drive coming o u t of th e turn. " a Kiedrowski took th e wi n in dramatic fa sh io n , w h i le T ichenor finis hed seco n d. Desp it e a m idpac k start, La Rocco lat ched on to th ird, followed by Mati asevich , Emig and Swink. La Rocco too k th e early lead in the second moto, ahead of Emig, Cooper and Kiedro wski. Tich en or was fifth a nd An tunez held si xth . Cooper qu ick ly passed Emig for seco nd, th en charged after his Suzu ki teamm at e, L a R o cco. Du r i n g th e seco n d la p , Co o p e r sai led past LaRocco over a double jump and too k over th e lead. La Ro cco, however, stayed close to Cooper a nd push ed th e new lead er in every turn for th e res t o f the race. Although LaRocco threa tened Cooper all o ver th e track, he never made a ser io us attempt to pass him , desp ite th e fact th a t Kiedro wsk i was closing in from third . It was a three-m an race to th e finish with Cooper taking th e chec kered fla g . just a few feet ah ead o f LaRocco, wh o didn 't have much roo m to sp ar e over Kied ro wski. T ich en or, who had taken over fourth fro m Emig early in th e rac e, finish ed fourth in front o f a hea ted th ree-way di ce bet ween Em ig, Suzu ki's La rry Ward , who su ffered a flat tire in th e first mo to, and Antunez. War d a nd Emi g exch anged a few harsh wo rds as th ey id led back to the pits. Despite ta king over the l 25cc series poi nts lead , Kiedro wski isn 't over ly op tim istic. " I just want to win races, th a t's all ," sai d Kiedrowski . " I'rn not worried about th e championship, it' ll co me wi th win s." eN o I""""! l-< IJ.) ..0 o .... u o Rick Johnson (13) had to fight past privateer Keith Bowen (24) to finish fourth in the first 500cc moto.
