It was Russell wh o had th e early advantage a t th e start of th e race . " I go t th e hol esh ot and led for abo u t a lap ," sa id Russell. " Bu t Scott, Ron (Nay lor) and Du an e were a ll right in th ere. We p robably went at it for three laps or so and every thi ng was go ing good until I go t stuc k in a mudhol e. Th ey h ad these bridges o ver th e mudholes but th ey were getting reall y slick and th ere were people all ove r th e place. So I tri ed going arou nd thi s one br idge but the mud was pretty soft a nd I had to p ush out of it. I fin ally got o u t but Scott a nd Du ane had already pulled aw ay and were o ut of sigh t. " Th e mudh o le e n de d Rus sell ' s c h a n ce for the overall win, a s Su mmers and Conner diced for th e lead way out in front o f the pack. "We pretty much swap ped back and forth th e whole wa y," said Conner. But three la p s from th e fini sh Conner lost more than a minute to Summers wh en th e Kawasak i rider ca me across a stu ck rider o n o ne of th e bridges over a mudhol e. " T h ere wa s a guy half o n and half off th e bridge," said Conner. " I tri ed to ge t aro u nd him but slip pe d off the bridge and into th e mud. It took me abo ut a minute and a half to get going agai n. I couldn't get th e bike o u t m yself; I wa s so stuck th a t I needed a cou p le of specators to help me get out of th e mud." .Once ba ck on th e tr ai l, Conner went all o u t and set after Summers , wh o now enjoyed a somewhat com fort able lead. H eading into the last lap, the Kaw asaki rider, Conner, had clos ed in o n th e leader and was just 20 seconds behind him. Sh ortly thereafter , Co n ne r was breathin g down Summers' neck. " I se t a kamikaz e p a ce ," sa id Conner. " Actua ll y both of us were reachi ng th e o u ter lim i ts, b u t I just could n' t get arou nd hi m. We to uc he d tires once or twice but Scott hel d me off." Summers roosted across th e fini sh line j us t a few seconds ahead of Conner for th e wi n . Crossin g th e finish line appro xi matel y two minutes behind the two lead ers in third p lace was H ough. But since Hough started o n th e second row - one m inute behind the AA riders - Hough ac tuall y finished abo u t 55 seconds behind the lead ers on ~dj us ted time. " I starte d a minute back but by the fourth lap, I was a lready up to third o r fo urt h o verall ," said Hough , who was riding a Kawasaki KX125. " T he n I go t passed by Russell a nd Lojak, but I passed th em back o n the last la p. I guess Summers and Conner were havin g a battle up fro nt, and th a t's wh y they go t so far ahe ad of me. Maybe by five minutes." " It wa s a lot of fun, a 'g ood race," sa id Co n ne r.
