TEAM T SPRINGS, CO, SEPT. 14
BOA
od Kirkbride pulled off the first
double win of his vintage MX
career th is weekend with a sweep
of th e 125cc and Vet Novic e classes
aboard a Honda CRI25 Elsinore.
-The Californian sp lit moto wins in
th e Vet di vision with Hu sqvarna
CR400 pil ot Jud ashier, and overcame
a bit of cont roversy in topping the 125s.
For the sixth year, the historicallyaccurate, I.2-mile course was la id out
in a field which is used for growing
ha y most of the year. This tim e arou nd,
thou gh , host club Timberline T ra ilriders threw in a q uartet of dit ch
crossings to make things interesting on
th e otherwise featureless hillside.
T emperatures in the mid-90s and
persistent winds combined to dry th e
soil, and with a total of 36 motos on
th e day, dust becam e quite a problem.
This event was round thr ee of th e
American H istoric Racing Motorcycle
Association's (AH RMA) National MX
Series, and also paid points toward th e
AHRMA Western Region Championship. Over 260 riders from 13 states and
England made up the show.
The controversy in the 125cc No vice
class occu rred at the sta rting gate,
wh en half of th e rid ers left on the first
gate with th e Amateurs, and .the other
half stayed behi nd for a separate start.
T he race was run, and a p rotest later
filed.
MOIO two went mu ch more
smoothly, and Kirkbride crossed the
lin e first aboard his Speed & Sportbacked Elsinore, and took home the
da y's overall victory. Rickman/ Zun dapp rider Rodger Cook an d J eff
Elings mad e it a 1-2-3 sweep for
Californ ians.
Kirkbride foll owed a shi er home in
th e first Vet NOV moto, whi le Rob ert
Ice
Norman came in third. The second
race, th ou gh , had Kirkbride's little
machine screaming ah ead of the pack,
and he earned the overall in fron t 'of
Oshier. Britalia Motors' J ohn McCoy
was third, but hi s first-moto fifth was '
only good enough for fourth overa ll
behind Norman.
The Vet and O ld Timer Amateur
classes were so large that they were
forced to be divided into two divisi on s
each , and the gates were still fulll Vet
Ama teur Division I was dominated by
Maicos , as the Red Roo ster M.C.'s
Marty Lukaszewski posted a 2-1 finish
to edge Vintage Iron -backed G reg
Owen 's 3-1 and Robert Doran 's 2-4;
Bill Pa tton on a fourth Maico trailed.
Local rider Steve Linquist on yet
another Ger man machine was the class
of Vet Amateur Division 2, while
Con necticu t's Lloyd Pa tterson finished in the runner-up spot aboard a
CCM.
Tom Mabry put his 1971 CZ 400 at
the top of the Old Timer Division I
heap , whi le Doyle Cook rode a BSApowered R ickman to second. The top
O.T. Division 2 award went to Speed
& Sport CZ-mou nted Terry Pratt, who
was serio usly challenged by Wayne
Sumner on a BSA during each outing.
Mike Beanway broug ht out a new (for
him ) Greeves 380 Griffon, and' left the
resort town with third overall.
Sumner came back to top th e 10rider Premi er 500cc Amateur division
aboa rd a BSA Gold Star. Perennial
victor John Huegel was second o.vera ll

Greg Grouleff (58X) rode h is Honda Elsinore to the I25cc Am ateur class win at the Steamboat Springs vintage MX.
Bill Ripl ey (48) manhandled his big T riumph ove r the dusty cou rse to win th e Open Twin Ama teu r cl ass.
on an Indian, while first-moto winne r
John Ford was third, riding a BSAframed Velocette. Team 25 Travel 's
Matt H ilgenb erg wo n the Prem ier
500cc Expert class.
T h e Vet Expert class is usually
tough , but this time it was brutal.
Loca l Pro Shawn Smith jammed to the
front of both motos, and was never
headed. Du an e J oice on a Yamah a
turned hi s 2-3 finishes into a secondp lace tro phy ahead of Gary J ump and
first -year Expert Kell y Ow en , riding a
Vintage Iron CZ. Off-ro ad racer
extra ordinaire Larry Roeseler entered,
but could only. manage a 14-2 after
crashing in the first moto and having
difficulty getting his CZ restarted.
Enduro hero Fritz Kadlec also raced
at Steamboat, finish ing fifth in the
125cc Experts aboard an obviously
i nferior Sa chs 125. Shawn Smith'
nabbed the win here , too, ah ead of
Vintage Ir on 's R ick "Holl ywood"
Doughty.
Smith made it a triple by smo king
th e 250cc Experts. Montesa-mounted
John H andelin was second, ll1liied by
