" a -ever'" Ascot likely- to decide title L st T he Saturday nigh t, Sept ember 29, Ascot Half Mile rou nd of the Ca mel Pro Series is bein g billed as the " last -ever" dirt track motorcycle race at the Garden a, California, facility. Alth ough there are skep tics wh o feel tha t th e cons tructio n of an o£fice buildi ng on the property will be dela yed for a t least a .year and racing will conti n ue at the facility in 1991 ; defendin g Gran d Nation al Ch ampion Scott Par ker and cha llenge r Chris Carr are not over ly concerned wit h that. Wh at they are concerned with is the 1990 Ca mel Pro Series Cha mpions hip. Go ing into Ascot, the next to las t round of the series, Harl ey-Davidson factor y rider Parker enjoys a 14-point lead over team mate Carr. Par ker could put the title ou t of Carr's reach with a win at Ascot. If. Park er wins, Carr mu st finish second or he will be elimi nated fro m the poin ts chase. Carr is in a mu st-win situa tio n, and th at 's a cha llenge he's mo re than capable of meeting at Ascot. Like Parker, he is a three-time winner on the fast half mil e oval. For winning the titl e, a rider collects $100,000 of th e $200,000 series point fund. Second pays $30,000, a whopping $70,000 differen ce. Twen ty-nine-year-old Parker has gone to the bank with the winner's share the past two years, while 23-yearold Carr was the runner-up last year and third the year before, behind Parker and Bubba Shobert. Going into this season, Parker had earned $316,500 in Camel point fund awards, Carr $166,500. Parker is shooting for his th ird straight Grand National Championship/Camel Pro Series number one pl ate , and by accomplishing his goal he would becom e only th e fifth rid er to win three or more titles. Carroll Resweber is the on ly fourtim e champ, while J oe Leonard, Bart Markel and Bubba Shobert won three titl es. Ascot has been the site of many title-deciding races, and could well be once again Saturday night. Although the Sacramento Mile closes out the season on Saturday ni ght, October 6, there are few who doubt that the titl e will be decided ' at Ascot. ' With ' the cancellation of the 1990 Barstow-to-Vegas Hare & Hound, AMA Di strict 37 is planning an alternate race called B-to-V (Battle-toVictory ) 1990 to be he ld over th e Thanksgiving weekend. It will be an AMA-sanctioned D-37 points-paying benefit hare & hound held at Johnson Valley , California, Although th e exact details are not yet finalized , the hare & hound may consist of three loops, totalling approximately 120 mi les, and all proceeds will go directl y into the D-37 "war chest, " D-37's legal defense fund.
