v 0ICES Letters to the editor Record setter John Long of Miami, Florida, set four o f the (Bo n nevill e land speed) records attributed to me in the September 12 issue. The co nfusio n is du e, no doubt, to my name, Scott Guthrie, being listed as the entrant, while a separate listing (not shown in th e official results) lists the actual rider of the motorcycle in competition. Long was an integral part of my ra cing effo rt thi s yea r, and was rewarded by the best performance that I am aware of by a novi ce in the 42year history of Bonneville Speed Week. J o hn set records in APS-AG-250, MPSAF-250, M-AF -750, and A-AG-750 classes. John drov e my partially-streamlined 1990 Yamaha TZ250A at a o ne-way speed of 159.950 mph, and becam e the one-way speed "record holder" for operating the fastest 250cc open-wheel motorcycl e that the Salt Flats have ever seen. John also drove my 1978 TZ750 without a fairing for a record speed of 171.550 mph. Of all the ma chines ever operated on the Salt Flat s, up to and includin g 3000cc di splacements, th is is t he fa st est record fo r an unstreamlined, si ngle engi ne, no rmall y aspira ted, gasoline mo tor cycle. J ohn also drove my 1974 TZ.700 at over 190 mph , to make h im the third fastest o pen -wheel TZ750 rid er in the hi sto ry of the Salt Fla ts, his speed exceeded only by Bill Vickery in 1976 at 195 mph and by me, th is year, with a best one-way speed of 203.550 mph in the measured mil e. John ' Long was an excelle nt additio n to our team this year. He was friendly , helpfu l, exhibited many moments of skilled riding, and his sense of humo r was always enjoyed. [ hope tha t J ohn will get credit where :redit is due, and that your reade rs will realize th is and have some appreciation 'or the wonderful job he has done. Scott Guthrie Scott Guthrie Racing Tallahassee, FL 't seems odd to see j oh n L on g referred ~o as a " nov ice." L on g was th e to p tan ked AMA Novice Toad racer in 1972 md he has enjoyed a long and suctessj ul road racing career. H e finis hed 'h ird in the j uly 22 Circle Bell Pro Twins Series GP1 road race in his 'IOm etow n of Miami . . . Editor. What' s he talking about? I am writing in response to the letter hat appeared in the August 29 issue 'ro m Thomas Sherman concerning the ~Iack Hills Classic: He says dishonesty > the clerk of course at the short track y even ts disrupted the program. Wh at event is he talking about? I was the :Ierk at the Rap id City 600cc National and also the 600cc National at Sturgis. I would like for Mr. Sherman to clarify wha t dis honesty by the cler k at those events took p lace. I feel he should have made his accusations more clear. As lor verba l abuse by our Number I rider, I didn't hear an ything. Maybe he was taking hi s frustration out on his mech anic. Som etimes when something goes wrong they don 't think befor e spea king and a bad word can come out. I don 't seem to be able to condem n them for that. Mr. Sherman never men tioned all the great raci ng th at the fans watched and enjoyed at the Black Hills Classic. I sure wou ld like to have an explant ion of his criticism. Sharon Andrae Urbana, IL Care to com m en t, Mr. Sherman? As for Chris Carr, the two-tim e 600 cc National Champion says he didn 't abuse his m echanic at Sturgis. " W e too k a razor blade to a hot tire and it went through it like a hot kn ife goi ng through butter. I yell ed 'dam n ' or something like that, but it wasn't the mechanic's fault and no abuse was intended." . . . Editor. Expand a lo ve Larry Langley is to be commended for his sustained enthusiasm and the co nsistent quality and organization of his California events whi ch span almost two decades. Responding to a Cycle N ews item , I called California Trail Riders about a dual- sport ride ca lled the " H i Sierra 250." I abo u t dropped the phone wh en La rry answered.
