~ LOCAL EVENTS GFIFall MX Series South: Round 1 ~ Musgrave manhandles Perris Motocross • • .. By Tony Alessi and Kim Scott PERRIS, CA, SEPT. 2 T K factory rider Willy Musgrave was the big win ner for round one of the GFI Fall Series by scoring wins in bo th the 250 and 500cc Pro classes. Musgr ave's three-out-of-four moto victories served notice that Musgrave will be the rider to beat throughout the rest of the series. In the first 250cc Pro moto Yamaha support rider Dana Wiggins loo ked strong but retired for the day af ter a cras h. Paul Villa, Tony Sulek and Tim Telford ran up front for most of the moto unt il Musgrave closed in. Musgrave made. short work of both Sulek and Telford and closed on Vill a. Musgrave was crawling all over Villa and made a pass down the back straight on ly to have Villa take it back at the end. Musgrave kept pinned to Villa right up to the checke red flag, while Telford nursed it ho me in third despite suffering motor problems. Ma rtin Klossn er and Ed Verhe lst rounded out the top five. Su lek, T elford and Villa battled for mos t of the second mot o. Musgrave started near las t and caug ht th e trio by the halfway poin t. Musgrave overtook the leaders in two short laps passing Sulek, Telfor d and Villa. Mu sgrave was back for the 500cc Pro race and was a virt ua l bulldog in both motos. Mu sgr ave tu rned the compe titio n to wh ip crea m after two laps in each mo to. Musgrave cruised wit h big leads beat ing the likes of Ga ry Sailo rs, Mik e H ooker and Sco tt McKey. Bill y Felts too k charge of both motos of l 25cc In terme diate racing. Felts ran away from Steve Drew, Aaron Wenstru p, Todd Cambell a n d Ra n d y Danylo in the first mo to. Felts was confident in the second mo to bu t had strong opposition from Terry Swanson, who kep t the pressure on Felts for eight straig h t la ps. Ca mbell and Dan ylo ha d a great ba ttle for thi rd swa pp ing positions seven times. £N , A Billy Felts (31 ) captured first place in the 125« Intermediate class at the opening round of the GFI Fall MX Series at Perris. McIlvane, La nce Smail, Ty Wallace and Steve Herm an before taking second. MOIO two saw Wallace take the early lead with Hughes second. Steve Herman held the third spot followed by Smail, Ma tt Bond, J a son You n g , Walker and Eric Koch . Wallace held off H ughes for two laps before losin g his bike over a berm , handing the lead to Hughes, with Herman and Smail also getting by before he remounted in fourth ahead of Bond and Young. Walker found himself on the ground a lap later, with most of the pac k getting by before he could remount. Hughes built a comfortable lead 10 take an easy win , with Herman fin ishing second in front of Wallace, Smail, Bond, Koch and McIlvane. A smiling Hughes said, "We cou ldn't get a flig ht back to California after yesterday's Na tional at Broo me-Tioga , so we decided to come racing here. This is a nice, fast track and the fans have been grea t." It was Walker go ing to the point in th e fir st 250cc Expert moto with " Ty Wa llace second followed by Barry Carsten, Eric Koch , Herman and Bond. Walker and Carsten went at it wheel-to-wheel, pulling aw ay from Herman, Bond and Koch in their battle for third. Midway through the moto, Walker cut a turn too close, nailing a large truck tire marking the comer and that put him on the ground and the tire in the middle of the track. That gave 'the lead to Carsten" wi th Herman second. Bond took 0 third in front of Koch, Young and Ed Koretsky. They finished in that order, with Walker able to come from the back of the pack to finish eighth. Walker again went to the front of the pack in moto two with H erman second, followed by Bond, Carsten, Boyesen, Koch and Scott Urban. Herman was on the gas and passed WQlk on the third ei lap with Carsten also gating by. Herman was able to out-motor ~caJaien and held on to take the win an dahe Win ner's share of the purse. Carsten ··lield onto second wi th Walker ta ki ng third ahead of Boyesen, Wallace, Koch and Bond. Kevin Crine took the immediate lead in both 250cc Ama teur mo te s and led every lap of both contests 10 claim the championship. George- Wolter went 3- . 3, good enough for second overall. Jo na than Reed, competing in his first race since finger surgery in May, went 2-5 for third. Rick Zupko went to the point in the first 125cc Amateur mo to, follo wed closely by Crine, Rick Maxon, Eric Reiley and J ason Corzine. Zupko was able to hold off Crine to take the moto win with Reiley taking third. Moto two saw Crine in front with Rob Stravinsky second ahead of Frank Regal , Mike Keating, Zya Braun and Tim Keating. Crin e an d Stravinsky battled for awhile before Crine was ab le to pull ou t a 10 bike-length lead. Braun dropped out with a broken clu tch cable, while the Keating bro thers, Mike and T im, battled for third; younger brother Mike won the war. The largest class of the day was the 125cc Novice division with 82 riders. Chris Coy, Newt Swartz and Richard Ru ck all won q ual ifiers, with Ryan Komas taking the consolatio n win . When the gat e d ropped for th e feature, it was Kornas at the head of the pack with Erik Peterson ru nning second, followed closely by Vince Ca tal ano, Anthony ' Pocorobba , and Newt Swartz, . Pacorobba was on the gas and quicky moved into second with Swartz tagging along in third as Chris Coy took over the fourth spot. Pocorobba took over the lead with a lap to go and the 13year-old took it to the checkers with Swartz taking second ahead of Komas, Coy and Chris Blake. Young Josh Demuth led every lap of both 60cc motos to take home a trophy that towered over him. Casey Higgins (2-2) took second in front of J oey Buratti (3-3). Demuth came back in the 80cc (7-11) class to aga in win both motos for his sec o n d State Cham pions h ip. Da n Updycke took the runner-up spot in front of Higgins. Keith Trocolli and Wayne Scott provided some of the closest racing of the day. Trocolli gated first in the first 80cc (14-15) moto with Scott a close second , followed by J ason Maurides, Rich Daley and T om Santaita. Trocolli and Scott went to war with Scott, getti ng a tire in front at different places on the track, bu t T roccolli turned up the wick to retake the lead and then the win by inches over Sco tt, Daley, Billy Delanzo and Scott Ghidiu. The next time out, T rocolli again pulled the holeshot with Scott rig h t there in second. Delanzo stayed with the leaders as Ghi diu and Maurides bat tled for fourth . Trocolli was able to keep Scott at bay until halfway through th e final lap when Sco tt stuck a wh eel insid e and turned up the gas to ta ke th e lead, the moto win and th e ove rall victory.
