Beh ind Hol as, Crippen and Chad Gravelle were fighting fiercely over fifth. With three laps rem ai ning, Hill rounded a sharp right-hand corner and cleared a set of small do ubles, launching him self a hea d of Doug Gravelle. Accelerating hard down th e cen ter stra ig ht, H il l began to erase th e cus hio n j en sen had mad e [or himself. Doug Gr avell e sta yed ri g h t with Hill , and soo n a three -man race [or th e lead had developed. Crippen, mean while , had passed Hol a s and was a ttem p ti ng to p u t himself back into th e contest as well . As the fro nt th ree riders co n tin ued to battle, Chad Gravelle passed first Holas and then Crippen to take over fourth. Finally, just seconds before the checkered flag , Hill powered hi s way by jensen and secured th e lead . Holas passed Crippen to cross th e finish line in fifth. Durkee dominates Canaan USA Speedway By Pete Giammalno CANAAN, M AUG.18 A, Roger Du rkee had the track dialed in as he won both heats and features in the 600 and 750cc Pro classes to take home the .lion 's share of th e money. Dave Bettencourt led every lap but th e one th a t counts in th e 250<:c Pro race. With Nab inger pulling away, Durand was bumping ' and pushing Mynck while Gl enn T atten watched [ro m fourth p lace . I Wh ite Brothers ' Robert Sheldon endured the hot weather and fo ur lo ng moLOS to emerge on topo[both the Vet a nd 125cc Novice cla sses during the Super Sa turday MX at Perris Raceway . Sheldon's day began in the l25cc Novice class where Larry Li nkogle aboard a bi~ wheel 80cc gave Sheldon th e most troub le. Lmkogle kept th e 80<:c machine pi nned to its [u ll poten tia l, not allowing Sheldon an o pport untty to close in. Dave Figuerroa and james Randall di ced [o r th ird but remained 20 seco nds behind the lead ers. Sheldon too k-off in the seco nd m ot o and established near a half tra ck lead by the molO'S end. First moLO winner Li nklogle was under suspended iIi the rough er second mot o and never ca me cl ose, fi nish in g third behind Honda rider James Randal. Schwartz, Bienert blast Ascot Spdwy By Scott Daloisio GARDENA,CA,A UG .~ Twenty.four hours a fter winni ng the inaugura l l6-lap main even t, Bobby Schwartz returned to victory circle at Chris Agaj anian's Ascot South Bay Stadium in the Scratch main. Ri ding the Budweiser/Silkolene/Sinisalo / T oys [or Pops/Bell- sponsored PPT from th e pole positio n , Schwartz took the lead when the tapes went u p. Mi ke Far ia was second o n the sta rt wi th Alan Christia n third. Wh en Sch war tz wheel ied off turn two th e first ti me, Faria and Christian tried to go underneath him. They ended u p battling with eac h ot he r [or second pl ace and th at a llo wed Sch war tz to mov e away. Christi an tapped Sch war tz as th ey en tered turn th ree o n lap o ne ' a nd took seco nd. Ho wever , Faria pulled alongside Christian on the back ch ute o n lap two and beat the 1985 National Champion th rough th e next bend and had h im by a half len g th at the race 's halfway po int. By the tim e Faria got past Ch ristia n , Schwartz was far out in fro nl. The race looked to be uneven tful after Faria took Ch ristian, but o n the last la p Rob Pfetzing, co m pe ti ng for the first time since crushing three vertebrae in Ju ne, went dow n hard in turn one. He hit his head on the ground and for a few minutes saw stars. Fortunately, he wa lked 0 [[ th e track under h is ow n po wer. Pfetzing tried to make the ca ll a few min utes later for th e Handicap main , but whe n h is mo to r died, he ended u p wa tching the proceedings [ro m th e center gree n. Steve Furman set th e ear ly pace, wh ile Don a do rn and Tony Bien ert were elbo w-to-el bo w for second j us t behind. Ron H u pfeld gated perfectly in the firs t Vet · Novice mo te followed by Dea n J ennings and Gates. By the seco nd lap Gates charged to the lead a nd bega n 10 pull away. At the hal fway mar k Gates was com fortabl y in front of all the vets incl udi ng the intermedia te and expert ride rs. Je n nings made a startling pas s on H up[el d near mo to's end , breakin~ H up[eld's concen tratio n and all ow ing SuzukI rider Gr eg Benton' to close in . Dea n G at es was ou t front of the second Vet Novice moto with expert rider Brad McCleod behi nd. McLeod pa ssed Gates before the first lap was com!?lete.
