M SEPT. I N, Minnesota 's 600cc class touring professionals were welcomed back from Sturgis. South Dako ta. with en th usiasm by homebody Peter Hoo k, who cruised to convi ncing wins in his heat race and the 600cc Pro main on the Montgomery Speedway fifth -mile dirt oval. Verdeen Langland battled Bill y Hofmeister and Dan Zitur from nag to nag to win the first 600cc Pro heat . In the second heal , Hook found a high line that sui ted his rear-stock Honda and cruised to an easy win over his Rotax-rnoumed adversa ries. Hook repeated the p rocess in the 600cc Pro main. H is closest pursuer wa s Kurt Boehlke. follow ed by Hofmeister and Marty Krenz who swapped positions repea tedly until Hofmeister was fina lly awarded third. _ Results . 250 AM: I. Hill conquers Portland Motocross By Dan Meeker PORTI.AND, OR, AUG. .lO Monte H ill swep t both moi os to secu re the overall win in the 250cc In termediate class at Portla nd Interna tional Raceway's Thursday night mot ocross. Doug G ra velle gra bbed the early lead in the first moto as the 250cc IDlennediates rounded the first left-hand tum. Imm edialely behind ,Gra velle was his bro ther, Chad Gravelle. and H ill . Fighting for possessi on of fourth were Ed J ensen a nd Kory Crippen. Sca ll Holas su ffered a first -lap crash that lell him chasing Mike Boe for the remainder of the mot o. As,the rid ers j umped the la rge tablelOp just pri or to the end of the first lap, Chad Gra velle and H ill ra n side-by-side. Gravell e refused to n inch . a nd held onto second as lhey ro und ed the nexl two comers 10 begi n the second lap. Jensen ro u nded the final comer of the lirs t lap wilh in a wheel length of Hill, a nd Crip pen bega n lo close the sma ll ga p between h imself and J ensen . Hill fell victim lO J ensen as he powered by near the lOp. The pass seemed lo ignile the Suzuki rid er as he pr essed ha rd 10 rega in his posi lio n. As Hill a pproached a tight, left-hand comer just prior to a sma ll tablelOp jump, Cha d Gra velle fell. In the same corner, Hill squeezed to the inside of Jen sen and successfu lly repas.\ed him , thus lakin g over seco nd.
