There was more to watch than just motorcycles at the Swedish Six Days. with an injured knee, and Tiley diced for a couple of laps until Wicksell made a daring pass on Tiley for the lead. From then on the moto was all Wicksell's. Tiainen's hopes for the overall win ended when his front wheel washed out in the mud and he crashed towards the end of the first lap. Tian inen recovered and went on to .finish 13th in the rnoto and second 111 the 250cc class final standings. All that stood between the overall individual championship and Wicksell was teammate Hansson. With Wicksell standing on 'the sidelines watching the 500cc rno to, former two-time ISDE overall winner, Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel stol e the holeshot with Hansson glued to his rear fender. Hansson passed Peterhansel o n the second lap and started pulling away. It turned into a race agai nst the clock, as Hansson looked for the checkered flag. Although Hansson's time was slightly better than Wicksell's in the fina l MX test, Wicksell edged Hansson for the overall indi vidua l win by less than one se<'ond. T he U.S. Junior World team went into the final MX test in third place and was threateni ng West Germany for second. H owever, Jun io r Wo rld rider Matt Stavish went into his mo to with an ailing KTM 250 that was on the verge of seizing. Stavish had to nurse the engine through the moto and finished a lap down on the leaders. The last U.S. J unior World rider left to race was David Rhodes in the 350cc Four-Stroke cIass. Rhodes jumped off to a top 10start but disappeared from action at the halfway point. " I landed off a jump a littl e sideways and the chain came off and wedged between the swingarm and the wheel," said Rhodes. "There was nothing I could do. I tried pulling the chain free but it wouldn 't budge. I can't believe it." Rhodes' misfortune dropped the U.S. J unior World team to fourth in the overall standi ngs, an d knocked Rhodes from a silver medal to a bronze. " For the first time in many years, none of the U.S. riders won a moto in the final MX test, altho ugh Club rider Gary Hazel looked to have a shot at a moto win in the 500cc class. Hazel grabbed the holeshot in his mo to but was passed by a couple of riders in the first turn. A lap later, whi le still running near the front of the pack, Hazel crashed, recovered midpack but was then taken out by another rider less than a lap later. "That was the moto from hell:' said Hazel. Imm ediately following the last moto of the day, both the Swedish Trophy and Of th e 406 riders th at star ted the event, 126 of th em ne ver mad e i t to the fin is h line , in cl u ding 14 Ame rican ri ders. Junior World teams began wha t would be a long night of celebration. "This was actually a lot harder Six Days than I thought it wou ld be: ' said Wicksell. 'That one section on days three . and four (between checks two and three) was very difficul t. I was surprised they kept that section in on day four. But for us, we are used to this kind of riding, It was tough for us, but a lot tougher for everybody else."
