· M BOARD~REPORT AA T Contemporary classic he American Motorcyclist Associati on Board of Trustees met in Westerville, Ohio, August 17 and . 18, on the occasion of the grand opening of the Motorcycle Heritage Museum. Chairman John Hasty reported that he had resigned from the American Motorcycl e Political Action Committee and that Mr. Youngblood had appointed Trustee Patty Mills to fill that seat. Mills reported on .her first act ivities as an AMPAC member including a reception for President George Bush that had taken place in Washington on June 19. She reported , that AMPAC had met on August 16 "to distribute funds to approximately two dozen campaigns and that the co m m ittee would next meet in October. H asty .a p p o in ted a committee, including three members of the AMA Congress, to review the Association's Code of Regu lations and deliver to the board and Congress recommendations on a number of proposed changes. The individuals selected for this committee included Charles Larsen, chairman; Robert Sinclair, Phi l O'Hagan, Dale Greenwald, and Joe Bilotta. Treasurer Bob Perkins reported on the Association's financial status through the end of J une, projecting retained ea rn in g s of just under $200,000 by year-end. At the request of th e president, representatives of the accounting firm of Ernst & Young, delivered a detailed report on the Association's financial status from 1985 to the pr esent . The report indicated the followin g: ·Cash and cash equivalents represent 58% of total assets, whi ch provides stro ng liq uidity. ·Property and'equipment represent 29%of total assets. Land and building, with a book value of $1.2 million, have an appraised value in excess of $2 million and average age of property and eq uipmen t is 4.5 years, p lacing the Association in a good position to handle debt , if necessary. ·The Association has no t had an opera ting deficit any year since 1985. The board authorized Youngblood to circu late information from the Ernst & Young report as necessary to clarifythe Association's financial position. At th e request of the president, representatives of Nationwide In surance, delivered a detailed report on th e Association's emp loyee pension program, its cu rrent status, and investment policies. After reviewing the cu rrent p lan and receiving an expl anati on of defined-cont ribu tion plans, ,the board resolved to con tin ue to offer a def in ed benefit pl an for AMA emp loyees. That study concluded that curren t premiums are not excessive based on vail able loss data. It also suggested tha t the Association should increase minimum limits for event coverage. You ngblood reported that lie and legal counsel had met with insurance carriers and that rate increases are expected for 199 1. The boarll au thorized Youngblood to distribute the Marsh & McLennan study to appropriate committee of the AMA Congress to faci litate information dissemination prior to annual sanction meetings. The trustees reviewed and approved a $6.58 million budget for the 1991 fiscal year that includes the establishment of a government relations office in Washington, D.C. The trustees noted that while th e Association remains profitable, operating margins remain very thi n. In view of th e worldwide situation th at coul d im pact the na tional economy and drive up fuel prices, the board instructed the president to develop a standby austerity plan. The trustees renewed the president's contract for a pe riod extending through 1993. Government Relations Vice PreSident Rob Rasor delivered a report on current issues, in cl udi ng the 1991 Federal Highway Reauthorization Bill and the BLM Wilderness Plan . He said th ere was serious doubt that a permit would be issued for the Barstow to Vegas desert race in 1990, but that Distri ct 37 and th e national office have maintain ed an aggressive stance toward the BLM and its obligations to organized events on public lands. During a study of the Associat ion's strategic p lan, the board approved a proposal to make application to host the FIM Congress in America in 1992. Columbus, Ohio, will be the site since ·1992 will be the q uincentennial of Columbus's discovery of America. T rustees Paul Dean, Jack Mangus, and Mark Blackwell and pro racing Vice Presiden t Ron Zimm ermann were appointed to a committee to undertake a strategic planning proj ect for proa fessional racing. The board bestowed the Dud Perkins Award for Outstanding Contribution to Motorcycling on two individuals whose names will be announced at a later date. They also bestowed 'I1!e Hazel Kolb Brighter Image Award .on severa l individuals, publications, and corporations.
