DuHamel (right) sprays the bubbly while Chandler (left ) ponders his first-ever Superbike National Championship. Scott Russell finished second. .Thecenter ~ With the hard-charging duo now ahead of him and visions of championsh ips dancing in h is head , Chandler backed it down to finish a comfortable third. T h ere was n o th ing co m fo rtab le abou t DuH amel' s lead, however, as Russell turned u p the wick. Wit h two la ps to go the Georgian was on the Canadian, a nd those who figured th e latter's Michelins would expire were wrong. As they started the fin al lap , Russell err ed in turn one, giving DuHamel a little br eathing room . He was back o n him by the Carousel , but the pair came upon Adamo, who was about to be . lapped. " I blew turn one by myself," Russell , who br oke Chandler's lap record with a 1:45.656 (85.182 mph) d uring the Nati ona l, said la ter. " Bu t h e (DuH a mel) stuffed it under Adamo and Adamo went right in behind him. I thought he (Ada mo) had more sense th an that. Bu t I gave it all I had." It wa sn't e nough as Du H a m el cros sed the line 3.7 seconds ahead for hi s first- ever National victory. Foll owing Chandler in fourth place was Stevens , who had gotten the bett er of Renfrow. " Unfortunately, this track wasn' t a good Yamaha track ," the Floridian said. " I had problems with left-to -right transitio ns. It would just rev and sp in because of the surface. I was hoping to hold on to them at th e start, but I didn 't get a good one and they were gone. Willow Springs will be more of a Yamaha track. " Renfrow had a relatively uneventfu l race, fin ishing fifth: " I learned a lot ," he said. " I got goi ng a littl e quicker and a lo t smoother. I think the Superbike pace is a lo t faster than at the star t of the year and I'll ha ve to contin ue to change and learn. I had a hard time get ting it hooked u p today. It was sp inning a lot. Thomas (Stevens) rod e well and did n' t make man y mistakes. Spencer finished a re laxed sixth, although he said he had a t least one ' close call. "The fro nt brake came back to the bars one la p going into (tu rn) one and I locked the back wheel," Spencer sai d. " T he rear brake on th e RC 30 is real tI 10 sensmve, I think we were geared wrong; we probably sho uld have left it where it was before we changed to the Dun lops ." Sadowski made a move toward s catching Spencer in th e final laps, but ran out of time. The Buford , Georgia , resid ent is still not physicall y ri ght, a nd will undergo back surgery foll owing the final ro und of the series a Will ow Springs. Following Sadowski was Kirk, who rode remarkably well considering his in j uries. " It hurt a lot, " he said. Kipp en ded up ninth and was s ort of puzzled about his finish. ' 'I' m not happy . about ninth, " he said. "B ut everyo ne was tough. They didn ' t die tow ar ds the end like I thought they might." Kip p also suffered from liot air exiting the radia tor and burning his hands. He sai d th e team will build some . shrouds to divert the air by Will ow Springs . T enth place went to Guenette, who faded after running as high as fifth, thanks in part to a n over heati ng engine. DuHa mel was ecsta tic with his wi n a nd, aft er gett ing help fro m Chandler with the champagne cork, he said: " It was a hot pace with Doug, but I didn't want him to get away. I was putting the pressure on him and then he made a few mistakes and I thought, 'I am getting to him.' I go t by when a slower rider was with us. Bu t then i t was hard to lead because I wa s so u sed to following Doug. My concentration ha d to double a t that point. I just kept the pace up and I didn't look back .once. This is my most satisfying wi n." DuHamel th anked Yoshimura USA, Michelin and Ara i. Results Q UAUFYING: 1. Doug Chandl er (1:45.947); 2. T h om as Stevens (1;47.243); 3.
