~ ROAD RACE World~ioDShiE_Ro_ad_R_ace_Se_ries_:R_o_un_dl_4 -'"""--_ I Bruno CaSanova (23), Alessandro Gram igni (39), Loris Capirossi (65) and Stefan Prein (7) do battle in the 125cc GP. fading brak es. A lap la ter Doohan had already built up a two-second lead and . it was ob vious that Ra iney was in no position to cha llenge. " I just kept pumping the lever and it finally came back to the bar," Rainey said. " I slowed up and thought I could fin ish th e race bu t there was nothing left. " The last time he used iron brakes was in Sweden last year. Curiously, Rainey's fastest lap came on the 16th in pursui t of Doohan, who'd set th e new lap record on the lap he passed Rainey. Rainey pulled out with two laps to go , mov ing everyone beh ind him up a notch. Gardner was al on e in fourth, the ba ttle for fifth not far behind him being waged among Mackenzie, Garriga, and Ruggia. Mackenzie was there for most of th e race, bu t found that at half distance his right arm was becom in g increasingly painful. "I've been hav ing trouble wi th a torn muscle in my upper right arm since th e Swedish GP two races back ," the 29-year-old Scotsman said. " I had intensive therap y here, and although it was very painful and troublesome when I was off the bike, it hadn't been giving me too much trouble when I was actually riding. After being slowed by the pain, he said: " I eased o rr, and I tho ught I cou ld hold orr the Yamahas of Garriga and Ruggia behind me. Then all of a sudden they were on me and I could do nothin g to prevent them fro m getting past." Mackenzie dropped to sixth on the 27th lap, losin g ano th er spot to fin ish seventh, just ahead of Fogarty. Garriga felt he lost abou t I0 seconds trying to get pa st Forga rty ear ly on, h is unorthodox lines th rough th e co r ners ca usi n g h im to exe rci se . , caution. Of th e 21 starters there were 16 fin ishers, .th e final five on private three-cylinder Hondas. 250cc Qualifying 18 Kocinski had been looking forward to racing on the tight and technical Hungaroring ever since he tested here prior to the Czech GP. He felt it was more of a rider's track where brute horsepower alone would not decide the out come' and he was confident of his ability to out-ride the best. When qualifying ended he'd backed up his word, but just barely. H is best lap of 1:45.952 was only .059 seconds faster than his arch-rival Cardus's with Martin Wimmer's Aprilia and Bradl's HB Honda a ll faster than the next Yamaha, that of Criville. Down 10 po ints with two races to go, Kocinski would need help in winning th e championship and it didn't appear he would find it here , at least not from a Yamaha. "It's important to win this one," h e said , understa ting the case. " I want to try and ride my own race - get a good start and be right there. I don 't want to be caugh t orr guard." Cartlus agreed th at a good start wou ld be necessary. " With all th e bumps there is on ly one lin e and it will be very difficult to pass," he said. Of more im portan ce to th e Spani ard was his tires. There has been a tro ubling inconsistency in the construction of his Dunlops and he was nearl y put on his head by an o ut of round tire on Saturda y. Jumping from 14th to th ird fastest o n Saturday was th e em ba tt le d Wimmer. He'd been chosen to assist in the track homologation in April when rider rep Sito Pon s was prevented from attending by previous bus in ess and was now realizing his mistake. "In a way I feel responsible for th e problems because I homol ogated th e track," Wimmer said. " Now I kn ow that in the futu re we must test a circui t on a motorcycle before we can give th e go-ahead. What ma y look okay wh en you test a track on foot , is very different when you race a GP bike on the track." As for assessing his sudden mastery of th e track , he was clueless. " We have been -fast, bu t we don 't know why. That lap was the first tim e I had tried hard on the bike we have been experimenting with a lot here. We have been making man y cha nges on the suspension an d that obvio usly worked," Wimmer said. Four th- fastest Bradl foun d the bumps especially ' unsettling to th e right ankle wh ich he broke in June. " I can do five laps or so no problem and then the pain comes and it just gets worse and worse," he said. "So in the race I think I will have to settle for a few points because I probably won't be able to keep a fast pace all the time ." ' The two Marlboro Agost ini Yama has were fifth and sixth fastest, Criville .077 second faster than Cadalora, despite a fourth-session crash. Cadalora, who's had problems with machin e setu p all year, made a mistake in the final session wh ich cost him at least a place on the grid. "I tried a wider rear wheel rim, but I didn't change any of th e other chassis settings and that was a mistake," he said, adding that he thought it would make the tire last longer in the race. Rothrnan s Honda 's Dominiq u e Sarron was eigh th- fastest having lost' time when he broke an engine in the final session while ninth-fastest Adrien Morillas had gained nearly a second on the Gauloises Blondes Aprilia afte r tryin g one of th e best Dunlop rear tires. 250cc GP T here was no way Kocinski could con tro l what happened behind him. His only hope was to make a quick star t and hope someone got in front of Cardus and that's exac tly wh at happened. At the flash of th e green Kocinski was-gone never to be headed. "After two laps my pi t board already said p lu s on e," Kocinski wou ld later say. The only question was wh eth er he coul d be caugh t. The first to try was Wimmer, but as in Brno, his engine seized slightly, causing him to lose some top speed and drop from second to seventh. Bradl was the next to give chase, but cou ldn 't put a dent in Kocinski's lead, whi ch grew to nearly two seconds by the 10th lap as he lapped in the high I:46 range, ab o u t a seco n d slo wer tha n he qualified. Cardus moved int o th ird on the th ird lap, the sam e lap Bradl took second, and .th e podium was set. Gradually, Bradl pulled awa y from his fellow Honda rid er until it became apparent that th ere were no team orders. If Bradl were to slow dra sticall y, as he did in Brno with tire trouble, it would have been too obvious. What might have slowed him was the pain in his ankle, bu t he perservered. "The pain got worse and worse after five laps," Bradl , who was weari ng a special boot to give the ankle more support, said, " I just gri tted my teeth and kept goi ng. The bike was reall y fast, though, which helped make up for the physical problems. " Cardus wasn 't expecting Bradl to , slow. " Honda riders defend their own interests," he would lat er say. " I ride for Repsol , Bradl for HB , Sarron for Rothrnans, These are lease bikes and you can ' t expect anyone in someon e else's colors to help you OU L If I had gotten help I would have been surprised." As had been anticipated, Cardus was slowed by a defective rear tire. He said he'd tried to follow Bradl, but couldn't keep up. " I knew then I wasn 't going to catch them," he said. Yet he was able to stay clear of the race's best scrap, the one for fourth. Waged among the two Marlboro Agostini riders and Rothmans' Sarron, it gave the impression that the World Championship was at stake. The trio swapped places II times over the course of the final 21 laps with the battle finall y coming down to the Yamahas after Sarron was slowed by a fever that he'd been fighting all weekend. " He was sick the whole night and didn 't sleep ,' " his crew ch ief Herve Poncharel sai d. " I woke him just before the 250cc star t and he still 'had a bit of a fever. He stayed .with Luca and Crivill e, but when he came in he fell orr the bike a t the end and asked for sugar." Leading go ing in to the final corner, Crivill e got into a big wobbl e, was nearl y thrown from the saddl e, and Cadalora slip ped underneath him for fourth. Criville held onto fifth with Sarron sixth, some 13 seconds back after having lost tou ch just five laps from the end. ' Lucky Strike Elf Honda's J acques Cornu got the better of a race·long duel with Wimmer to take seventh, though Wimmer was happy to save his fifth place in the cham pionship.
