Although.located at th e base of the mountains, Glen Helen is on arid land and drought conditions still exist in southern California. But accordi ng to DeCoster , th ere is pl enty of water available for use on the trade "I can 't make it like Una dill a, you can on ly work with the ground you have," said DeCoster. " (Bu t) we will have a good track. " So using the availab le land, DeCoster design ed the course, mu ch of which is in view of Glen Helen 's main grandsta nd a rea. H ow ever , th e bleachers are planned to be used as a VIP area for th e man y supporters DeCoster has lined up for the event and may not be open to the gen eral public. DeCoster says that.h e may add more bleachers in th e same area, and po ssibl y at another locati on , for publ ic use. But there will still be plenty of viewing areas around the perimeter of the track , man y of them much closer to the actio n than the grandstands. A path and viewing areas have been cut into the hillside so that specta tors can move to different parts of the course, plus there are many good vantage points from the hillsides. Besides th e acti on on the tra ck, there will also be a Moto Expo with the latest motorcycles and products exh ibited in a carn iva l-like atmosp here, demo rides on Honda Cubs and Suzuki DR du al sport machines, a freestyle mot orcycle . show and autograph sessions. Two beer ga rdens will be located at opposite en ds o£ the course, and although spectators can bring ice chests into the facility , alcohol and glass containers are prohibited. Vintage machines, including DeCoster's former factory Suzukis, will also be displayed, with a special Vintage Iron Invitational G P on Sunday featuring MX StaTS of the past such as Brad Lackey, Mart y Smith, J im Pomeroy, Jim Wein ert , J ohn DeSot o, Gary Jon es, Guenady Moisseev and many others. DeCoster says he likes to loo k at th e old bikes but n ot ride th em and will not compete in the event. Most all o£the current 500cc G P stars are ent ered, includin g newly-crowned World Champion Eric Geboers. In th e past, the U.S. GP fell in th e middle of the sea son a n d th e Europeans gen erally let the Americans run off with the top spots since they weren 't in con tentio n for th e champion shi p. This year could be different since Geboers has already clinched the titl e. ·" In th e past the Europeans have alw ays had to think about points," says DeCoster. " Now that 's not an excuse. It's a perfect op port unity to measur e themselves against the Ameri can s." Geboers has already proved DeCoster wrong on ce thi s year by taking the title wh en DeCoster cr iticized h is training habits and many other activities besides raci ng. (Geboers a lso flies heli copters, promotes races, and runs a Belgian triathl on tearn.) " I expect he will try to prove me wrong again," DeCoster says. Au stralian J eff Leisk will jo in Geboers on the Chambers HRC Honda team, but he's been sidelined wi th a broken finger for severa l races an d may not be back up to speed. En gland's Kurt Nicoll , who will ride a factory KTM , will ha ve to go fast to ma intain his second place in the point standings. Belgian Dirk Geuk ens will be tryin g to overtake him for the silver medal. Geukens must be careful, however , th at compatriot 7.
