Sadowski crashes, wins, takes over point lead By Pau l Carruthers Photo by L arry L awren ce LEXINGTON, OH, AUG 5 fter a rather bizzare turn of events , Van ce & Hines Yam ah a 's David Sadowski won the 600cc Superspo rt race . today, and also took over the cha mpionsh ip point lead ; " Sado wski was o ne of eig h t riders who cras hed in oi l o n th e fourth lap, bringing o ut the red flag . At that point leader Scott Rus sell stopped hi s Muzzy Kaw a saki a t the en d of the fron t straigh t, turned arou nd and rode the bike back up the pit road in the wrong directi on , a violati on of AMA rules. H e was thus pe nalized a lap. Sadow ski mad e i t back to the pits wh ere hi s Vance & Hines crew quickly got the Yamaha FZR600 back in workin g order. Sado wski then went o u t and battl ed with J eff Farmer and Thomas Stevens on the resta rt, and ultimately beat the two Flor id ians to take the win . With Russell not scoring any points after hi s 19th pl ace finish , Sadows ki also took over the po int lead . He no w leads Farmer, 93-86, wit h Russell falling to thi rd with 81 po int s. Like Sadowski' s crew chief Steve J ohnson said : " It's not often you cause a red flag, and th en end up with the po int lead." Sad owski did jus t tha t. Russell was on the po le for the 600cc fina l by virtue of his fast heat win . T he second heat race was won by Sado wski, and the final looked set to be a thrill er. At the drop o f the flag, ho wever, Ru ssell had o ther noti ons and he was lead in g the pack by the tim e th ey got to the Keyhole, a right-hand turn that leads to the backstraight. Ru ssell th en mad e the mi scue of the ' seaso n, turning arou nd and ridin g back int o the p its the wrong way af ter the red flag . He claimed later that he hadn't heard the rule mentioned in earlier riders meetings. The restart saw Ru ssell , who had change d rear tir es during th e break after hi s origi na l tire had sta rted to go flat , grab the lead, but he was a lap down du e to th e pena lty. H e wo uld lead to th e flag in a desperate attemp t to at least score poin ts - he did n' t, and h is efforts were no t rewarded. Meanwhi le, the race for the "real" lead consisted of a three-way battle between Sadowski, Farmer and Stevens.
