Instead he woul d just track perfectly, kicking up a large spray in his wake. Fur ther back, Fenwick was solidly in fifth when he made a race-ending slip. While trying to catch Petersen, Fenwick went too fast into the famous Grattan bowl and went down. Fenwick joined the fallen ranks which included Mike Karm , Jeff Hagan, Brian Bernard and Brian Lantz. Kling worked his way around Smith on lap 16and then gave chase to Oliver, gelling as close as seven seconds, and in the pr ocess turning the fastest lap of the race (a 1:41.09, compared to Oliver's best of 1:41.19). Petersen was following his teammate 's lead and put his TZ into second. It looked like it would be a Marlboro Roberts one-two finish until Petersen's bike sta rted running on only one cylinder. Petersen then began to fall back on the slowing bike and though he was able to keep going to the checkers , he finished a disappointing sevent h. As the race came to a close, Oliver widened his margin over Kling to II seconds . Smith rode to a lonely thirdplace finish . Hall overcam e his hesitanc e on th e wet tra ck to reel in and pass Miller and Rodden to finish a season-best fourth. Ol iver's win moved him within one point of Smith for the lead in the series po int standings. With many of the top rid ers missing th is round, the series is becoming a dogfight between th e Val voline Suzuki a n d Marlboro Roberts teams. Oliv er is still hoping for a 500cc Grand Prix bike sin ce the rest of th e se ri es rounds are at high-speed circuits. CN F-USA: I. Rich Oli ver (Yam); 2. Friu Kling (Sur); 3. Mike Smith (Sur); 4.
