World Championship 250cc MX Series: Round II Vehkonen slashes Venezuelan GP MARACAY, VENEZUELA, JULY 22 in land 's Pekka Vehkonen topped the Venezue lan G P in Maracay with a two-mote sweep in from of an estimated 15,000 spectators. Marn iq c Bervoets claimed second overa ll with 3-3 scores, while newlycrow ned 250cc World Champion Alessandro Pu zar seized while leading th e first moto ' but came back to fini sh second in rno to two. Conditions for the first 40-min ute plus two-lap moto were very muddy sinc e th e track had been wa tered h ea vily before th e G P , th en ra in sho wers added mo re water on Saturday n igh t and Sunday morn ing. Vehkonen di dn 't have m uch to worry abou t in the firs t moto as he grabbed the lead off the start and stayed there until Puzar passed him four laps before the end. Bu t just two corn ers later Vehkonen repassed th e Ital ian, then Pu zar's radiator became caked with mud and the engine overheated and seized. En gland's Rob Herring suffered a sim ilar rate ear lier in the race when his radiator broke. After Pu zar dr opped out Van den Berk took up the chase and moved in on Veh ko nen, who rose to the cha llenge and main tained a little over four seconds on him to the finish. Bervoets fin ished th ird , more tha n one mi nute behi nd. Only the top six finished on the same lap as Vehkonen. Track conditions improved for the second rnoto, only thi s time high humidit y would be the riders' major o bstacle. Peter Joh ansson led Ior some time until he tired and dropped back -to sevent h. Veh kon en was there to take the lead and had a good ba ttle wi th Puzar, Van den Berk and Herr ing. A broken exhaust pipe put Herr in g back to ninth, whi le Vehkonen held off Pu zar's attacks to take the win. Bervoets passed Van den Berk in th e second half of th e race to fin ish third, a nd his 30 po in ts for the da y ho isted h im from ninth to six th in th e points standings, Of F OVDlALL: I.
