Privateers Kurt McMillen (28) an d Mike Fisher (23) fight for the lead at the

wide in the first turn and a lot of peopl e
jumped to the inside of me," said
Cooper.
On e of those riders was Emi g, who
found himself in th e lead ahead of
Antu nez, Mariasevich , Kiedrowski,
Bayle, Vohland, Cooper, G lass and
Suzu ki's Denny Stephenson and th e
rest of the field.
Em ig led for th e next three laps,
wh ile Matiasevich moved into second
and Kiedrowski th ird. Bayle held down
fourth.
By th e fou rth lap , Mati as evich
rooste d by Emig, as did Kiedrowski
and Bayle a lap later. Emig began
dropping off the pace an d event ua lly
fini shed 19th in th e moto.
Once into the lead , Mati asevich
stretched out his advantage to abo u t
five seconds, while teammates Kied·
rowski and Bayle, both of whom are
known to have tangled handlebars
many times in the pa st, diced for
second .
Shortly thereafter Kiedrowski let
Bayle have second and began falling
off the pac e a bit when he again began
exp eri en cin g pro bl em s with his
goggles.
"I kep t getting sweat in between the
tear-offs, " said Kiedrowski. "T hen I
had to yank off all the tear-offs before
I cou ld see aga in."
With clearer visio n, Kiedrowski once
again picked up his pace and cha rged
back after his bitter rival, Bayle, and
soon passed him. Th is time, however,
Kiedrowski's charge didn't end th ere.
Instead he pulled away from Bayle and
reeled in the leader, Matiasevich . With
just a few laps remaining Kiedrowski
was glued to Matia sevich' s rear fender,
setting the stage for a clima tic fini sh.
" Mike came ou t of nowhere," said
Ma tiasevich. " I had to pick up my
pace, whi ch was a comfortable one
until Mike came up ."
The last few laps featured an all-ou t
du el between Matiasevich and Kiedrowski , wi th Matiasevich hanging on
by a thread to beat th e defend ing 125cc
National champ.
" I go t a good start and kep t the bike
on two wh eels - I've been havin g a
problem with that latel y," said Matiasevich. "T his is my first-ever Nati onal
moto win and I just hope there's many
more to com e after thi s."
" Once I could see I started picking'
some go od lines a nd just sta rte d
moving up," said Kiedrowski. " I had
no problems with Bayle at all today.
I passed him; he got around me, and
I gothim back - no problems."
" Matiasevich was going really good
- h e surprised m e," said Bayle.
"Cooper was way back of me, so I
settled for where I was and took the
po ints.
"As far as Kiedrowski," said Bayle,
" I didn't want to crash with him again,
so I stayed away from h im."
"I just couldn' t get aro u nd Vohland," said Cooper. " I foll owed him
for over half of th e race. Fin ally I got
by him but was 26 seconds behind
Bayle. There was nothing I cou ld do
to ma ke that up. But I am happy that
Bayle got third, whi ch means he didn 't
gai n as many points on me as he
could' ve. I'm still in th e hunt and
there's still six races to go."
