R ick Kirk took ,he lead o n hi s ho me tra ck from th e start , ah ead of T eam Suzuki's topg uns - Britt Turkingst on , Mike Smith and Kurt Hall. Turki n~lOn rode closel y on his ta il, lap after lap , wa ning for Kirk make a mIStake, but neither hap pe ned as Kirk ,ook the checkered n ag first 10 ta ke the win . Howeve r, the A Producti on /Superstock race was d isappoi n t in g ro r Kirk's fans. Turkington too k th e holeshot arou nd tur n one to ' ta ke the lead. Kir k, however, was u nd au nted, and stayed righ t on "T urk's" back tire for the first six laps. Kirk th en mad e hi s move and passed Turkin gton o n the seventh '0 lap . Then , o n th e last lap , Kirk lost the front en d and low -sided in tu rn n in e, leaving Turk in gt on with o n ly turn 10 sta nd i ng betw een h im and victor y. Another Tu rkin gt on win came in the C Producti o n / Su perstock sp rint . T urkingto n and Sm ith bat tled it ou t on th eir Suzuki GSX600 Ka ta na s. This scena rio con tin ued until lap four ; by thi s tim e, T urkingto n had in creased hi s lead 10 several bik e lengths. Smith tried despe rately to clo se the gap, a nd succeeded by lap seven . He th en tried to pass Turkin g ton in turn o ne o n the last la p, bu t ran in to slower traf fic and was fo rced to cross th e fin ish lin e beh in d Turkington. " I mi ssed a ~ear in 'urn nin e and that slowed me down, " said Sm ith. " I was able to get back th e distan ce I lost, but no' qu ick ly eno ug h. Randy Skin ner, Frank Stiener a nd George Kohler had a grea t first mo ro battle in th e Vet Int ermedia te class. Stein er led it most of th e way until Ski nner mad e th e pa ss. But Geo rge Kohler surp rised everyo ne by pa ssin g both Steiner and Skinner on the final laps. Skinner stole th e show in the second moto a nd was virtuall y un tou chable. Steine r stayed dose but never mounted a charge. First mot o winne r Geo rge Kohler never mad e it to th e ga te, the win went , to Skinner via his 2-1 pe rforma nce. In th e fina l Batsell and Wrigh t wer e q uite surprised to be passed o ne lap into the even t by Wrigh t's bro th er Sh ane o n an o ld Yamaha.
