Rick Miller (2), along with Moran and Corey, qualified to represent the U .S. at the Inter-Continental semi finals. Correy took . a mu ch smoo t her passa ge into the next round. He looked th e more impressive a nd was cer ta in ly the most co nsistent of the Am erican quartet. H e had failed to ge t o ne of th e four places from the Cal ifornia qu alifier, but a s first reserve, he stepped in when Greg' Hancock was forced to pull out with th e arm fra cture he su stained in the Long Beach, California, run-off a whil e back. Correy was keyed up to make the m ost o f hi s seco n d c h a nce and , altho ugh he was beaten by Wil tshire in his first race, hi s win over Mill er next time ou t put him a mo ng the leaders. The objec tive was a pl ace in the semi fina l and Correy was never in doubt. Tw o m ore secon d places behind Tatu m a nd J erem y Doncaster , who went o n to co m p lete th e 15-point maximum, saw him safely home before he' tai led off in his last race. Mill er was more of a surprise pa cket. H e was ridin g o n his home track but he had don e tha t in two previous overseas rounds without having any success . This time he mad e the hom e . adv antage co unt. Moran, alo ng with fellow America ns Ronnie Correy a nd Rick Mill er, moved one step closer to th e World Championsh ip fin als with co nsistent finishes at Coventry. Moran was the top scorer of the four Ameri can riders wh o co mpeted at the overseas even t by finishing thi rd. just o ne point ahead of Correy, while Miller finish ed two po ints behind Hamel. The fourth American rider, Bill y H amill, wh o was the top scorer on .the California circuit last year, co uld not produce hi s usual winning form and was never in co ntention for one of the n ine places that . were available for the sem i finals. H e tall ied S on ly fo ur poi n ts a nd was way down th e chart in 15th place. Thenight's top qual ifier was England 's J erem y Doncaster, who co mpl eted a 15-p oint maximum score, whil e Australia ' s Todd Wiltshire fin ished second with 13 points. Moran had some a nxio us mom ents before he finally got hi s act together. He made a good openi ng to lead in hi s first race but was then pushed back to second wh en he was overta ken by Engla n d' s ca pta in Kelv in Ta tu m. Mor an foll owed with two th ird pl aces a nd a t th e interva l h is qualifying cha nces were in the bal an ce, but aft er the halfway point Moran was a lot more co ntro lled. T wo sli ck starts and some determined riding brought him two comfortable wins and places on th e rostrum. He inflicted the first defeat o n the Australian, Wiltshire, and then Co ventry clubrna te Tatum.
