In the l O -Iap Vet Expert final , Ron T urne r took com ma nd when John Silva fell at the begi n ni ng o f la p two and open ed up a few seconds o n Rex Staten. At the halfw a y point, however , State n began to cha rge and was soo n o n Turner 's rear wh eel. But St aten 's charged ended on the sixth la p wh en hi bike quit with ignition problem s. Turner cru ised to th e win and collected 450, whi le Brad I\IcLeo d in herit ed second and held o ff SCali J ohnson to the fini sh . . Craig Decker tried to fight off Dam on H uffm an in the Min i Expert class , bu t Huffma n powered by halfway through the five-lap fin al to wi n and co llect $200. Merced es Go nzalez had no tro u ble winn in g th e Wom en 's Expert final as she took th e lead from T ami Ri ce on the first lap a nd pulled away for a $200 pa y check. Rice ca me under a ttack from J eann ie Pruitt. but Pr u itt ra n in to a fall en rider o n an uphill and dro pped back to fifth. Tara H arrison fell fro m second o n th e first lap , but charged back up to third and was cha llengi ng run neru p Rice o n the fin al lap. Step ha nie Jones fin ished fourth. In one o f th e mos t exciting ama teu r finals , Aaron Wenstru p grabbed the hol eshot at the sta rt o f the 250cc J u nior main, but was joined by Will ie Miller on the second lap o f the seven-la p race. For the next two la ps, Miller made severa l at tempts to get by, but each tim e Wenstrup slammed the door. O n la p four, Wens trup fell back to fourt h a nd Mill er cruised to th e wi n. Tom T emplin held off Andrew Olivia for second, "..hi le Wenstrup took fo urt h on th e track but was bu mped back to fifth by Ray Groom, who had a low er poi nt tota l from hi s two qual ifyin g rnotos. Steven Lawl er started fourth in the Open J uni or fin al but picked o ff Brian Sharp a nd T o m Bolton early in th e seven-la p race and closed in o n leader R ich a rd H orn e. After two laps o f pr essu re, H orne slid side ways a nd La wler slip ped by and pulled away to th e win . However, Lawl er's 10-2 score from h is divi sion thr ee qualifiers left him fourth o verall, a nd H orne, wh o had a I-I score in th e th ird division , grabbed th e overall win with his ru nner-u p fin ish in th e fin al. Brian Co rnel iu s fin ished the final in third pl ace a nd was second overall, while Bolton's fifth · pl ace fini sh in the final gave him third overall. Derek Na tvig (23) surprised ever yon e in the early laps of the 125cc Expert main, Tallon Vohland (40) eventually got by.and won while Natvig faded to eighth. Jim 0' eal was chasing Ken Ra u lo ff early in the Senior class final when he fell, but O 'Neal maintained second an d cha rged bac k near th e end o f the fivelap race. At the beginning of th e final circu it, O 'Neal stuffed Ratzlaff a nd too k off to the win . " It was a n aggressive pass, bu t I had the lin e and reall y wanted to wi n," said O'Neal. O 'Neal didn't have any tim e to rest before he ra ced aga in in th e Vet In term ediat e ' class. J on Mill er cha llen ged Doug Taft for the lead early in . the race, but J ohnny Adams passed them both in a corner. Mill er quickl y reta liated a nd took the lead for good as Adams slipped o ff the pace to 12th and T aft dropped bac k to fifth. La wler charged u p to take second at the finis h wi th O 'N eal trai ling, a nd O 'N eal 's com bi ned scores gave h im seco nd overall behi nd Miller. Mich ael Bra ndes won both 125cc Int ermediat e Division One qual ifying motos, then topped the final as well after he passed Chris Ridgeway early in the race. Ridgeway fell back to a 30thplace fin ish , whi le Ton y Amara dio a nd T y Birdw ell dis p uted second. After bauling for a cou p le of la ps, Arnaradio got by and was closi ng the ga p on Brandes befor e time ra n out. Bill y Felts passed David Cas tillo to finish fourth in the fin al. Felts easily wo n the Open lru ermediate fin al o ver Cas tillo , but both riders ra n into bad luc k ' in th e 250cc Int ermedia te final. Cast illo cras hed in the first tu rn a nd went to the hosp ital wit h a co ncussio n, while Fel ts dropped from a ba ttle for second to 30th a t the fin ish.
