eROAD RACE !MAiers Yokohama 600cc SUper8p0rt Serits: Round 4 e Dou g Chandler leads Scott Ru ssell during th e red-nag shortened 750cc Supersport race; this is ho w they fin ished. Russell earns this one By Paul Carruthers LOUDON, NH,JUNE 1 7 ea m Mu zzy Ka wasaki ' s Scott Russell may have received his 600cc Su persport win last weekend in Brainerd, Minnesota, in a gift box, bu t th at wasn 't the case here at the New Hampshire In ternational Speedway today . At the third round of the series in Brainerd, Ru ssell was the beneficiary of the crash tha t saw Van ce & Hines teammates Thomas Stevens and David Sadowski elimi na ted on the fin al lap. Today, however, Russ ell n at out beat all challengers as he scampered to the win, his second successive. Second pl ace today went to th e revitalized Kevin Ren tzell on hi s brand new Forb es Racing-backed Yamaha FZR600. Defending 600cc Ch ampion Scott Zampach finished third with Sadowski fourth and Pascal Picotte fifth . . Notab ly absent from the top of the standings was Road Atla nta win ner Stevens. The Floridian dropped down to fifth in the point standings after crash in g his Yamaha FZR600 on the fourth lap while running second. Russell's second straight win gives him the point lead over Sadowski, 5640, in th e championship. Third p lace is jointly held by Zampach and Daytona winner Jeff Farmer, who did not finish today, with 39 points . Rentzell had sold his old Yamaha FZR600 immediately after winning on it here at Loudon a week ago during a club race. He then purchased a new one from Jacksonville Yamaha in North Carolina, and it arri ved at the track on Friday morning. Rentzell was plea sed with the new bike, especially with what he found to be drastically improved four-piston brakes, and he promptly went out and beat Russell in heat race number on e. Russell got a bad start and worked his way through to second place after ending the first lap in seventh. Zampach finished th ird in the opening heat race. The second heat race was an intrateam Vance & Hines battle between Stevens and Sadowski, with Barnes watching from behind. Sadowski led until the final lap when Stevens passed him in turn six - on the outside. Barnes, Ashmead and Picotte rounded out the top five finishers. r 66 T he 20-lap 600cc fina l go t underway with Rus sell leading th e way into turn one. Ren tzell would later complain that Rus sell was a Iittle rough. "W hen I passed (David) Sadows ki, Ru ssell went to the extreme left and took my front end out," Rentzell said. "Then he was able to break clear. It was in tentional , and I'd love to return th e favor." Russell would later counter: " He's full of shi t. I th ou ght it was Sado wski. I didn ' t look back. He just hit my leg, there's a black mark on it. I had the lin e. He was behin d me." Back to raci ng, Russ ell led at the end of the first lap, and he would never be headed, cru ising to win by some five seconds. The battle for second was more int ense. Initiall y, Sadowski led Stevens with Rentzell in tow foll owed by Zampac h. . Stevens passed Sadows ki go ing into turn one on the fourth lap, bu t crashed ou t two turns later. " I just lost th e fro nt under braking," Stevens sai d lat er. Rentzell slowl y star ted reeling in , Sadowski and on seventh lap he took over the runner-up spo t. Rentzell then pulled away and soon th e injured Sadowski had his hands full .with a closing Zampach. On lap 18, Zampach fo u n d a wa y past Sadowski to take over th ird . That's as far back as Sad owski wo u ld fall. Picotte fin ished fifth , a distance behind Sadowski. Michael Barn es crashed on the 18th lap while trying to pass a lapped rider . on the inside of the uphill tum four. He restarted the race and finished 27th. Zampach was one of many not impressed with the "new" New Hampshire International Speedway. "I'd rather fight Mike Tyson than race on this race track." Of Results HEAT ONE: I. Kevin Renuell (Ya m); 2. AMAlCCS Yokohama 750cc Supersport Series: Round 4 It's all green at Loudon By Paul Carruthers LOUDON, NH, JUNE16 eam Muzzy Kawasaki' s Doug Chandler and Scott Russell gave event sponsor Kawasaki something to remember today as they started a weekend of Kawasaki wins with a 1-2 finish in the}5Occ Supersport race at New Hampshire International Speedway. . The two teammates battled for the entire 13 laps of the red-flag shortened race, and it was ultimately the timeliness of the nag that gave Chandler the win. Chandler collided with a back · marker and was forced 0[[ the track, allowing Russell to pass. Fortunately for Chandler and unfortunately for Russell, the red nag came out soon after and the results reverted back to the lap prior to Chandler's mishap. Third place went to R.E.S-backed r Rick Kirk on a Suzuki GSXR750. Kirk topped Yoshimura Suzuki's Tommy Lynch with Forbes Racing-sponsored Kevin Rentzell rounding out the top five finishers. Chandler's win allowed him to close slightly on Rus sell in the championship point standings, but the Georgian still leads the chase by 15 poin ts, 6853. Lynch is third in the standings with 35 points. The Chandler/ Russell battle began on Saturday morning with the two going head to head in heat race one. This time it was Russell's tum to win as he topped his teammate by .450 of a second. Kirk finished th ird beh ind the two Muzzy teamsters. The second heat ra ce saw Lynch beat Rentzell to the finish line by .660 of a second. Third place went to local Tod Hebert. Rus sell grabbed the holeshot at the start of th e final with Chandler in tow. Those two quickly pulled awa y from th e group of Lynch, Kirk, Robert Wright, Hebert and Tripp Nobles. Wright dropped oil in turn six when . he wore through the feed line to the oil coo ler. As a direct result, Chris Reiner and William Gillis crashed, bringing out the red flag. After a delay for oil cleanup, it was Chandler grabbing the holeshot, Lynch was next, but he was soon passed by Russell who set out after Chandler. T he duo again pulled clear, leading by some 10 seconds when the Chandler in cident with a lapped rider occu rred. " I cam e up on th em, there were four or five of 'em," Chandler said. " I didn't want to do anyth in g drastic. I decided to get two of them and the second one swerved over. I too k his handlebars out and it took me into th e cones." Russell went pas t but it was all for . nau gh t as John Crowl ey and T im Barclay crashed in scary fashion after hitting oi l en tering tum one. The win went to Chandler with Rus sell settling for second. " We've still got a comfortable point lead," Ru ssell said later. "I just have to finish ahead of him at the next few."
