Pepper tops Pine Ridge Enduro By R oger Dowden CH.WROX SE,MAY6 , Co llege student Kelby Pepper took a break from his semester finals to trav el to northwest Neb raska lor the secon d round of th e Roc ky Mo u n ta in Enduro Circuit and beat 410 o the r rid ers at th e 22nd Annual Pine Ridge Enduro . The lOJ-mile course TOuted the rider s th ro ug h pastu res and a lo ng tree-lined strea ms to test th eir time-keepin g a bi li ties. After a n intense week of fina l exa ms, he borrowed his dad' s KD X and headed for Nebraska. Thoug h the two were close eno ug h to race from time to li me, Bruckbauer was a h ead by virtue of lie-br ea ker po in ts go in g into th e II th chec k. U n fo n una telv Bru ekbauer b urned that ch eck a nd co u ld o n ly tie Pepper's score in the last sect io n, th e infamous " Dea th Con " ra vine. Pepper overa lled th e event with a sco re o f nine. Bruckbauer was nex t with I I poin ts. There was a th ree-wa y tie for third a nd AA r ide rs Kevin Da vis, Chris Wilbanks and Fritz Kadlec all a massed 13 points. Aft er th e tiebreaker s were figu red, Da vis had o u t-fin essed th e two younger rid er s. Mark H yn es p ut in a smooth ride a n d dropped 14 poi nts. The top A rider was 250ccA pilot Ji m Gray wi th 15 points. Right o n his hee ls was la s' year 's ove rall B circu it champion W a yne l nt errn ill o n another 250. They were followed b y 200cc A victor George Vif la nyi . who dropped 17 poi nts. . The ove rall B trophy wen t to O pen rider Mike Colbert. who carded 27 poi nts a nd in the p rocess bea t h is bro ther Casey. who wo n th e O pen A class with a sco re 0 1 28. KTM rider Les Resler also dropped 27 to to p th e 2.iOcc B class. J ust 2 minutes behind was another 250cc B rider , last yea r's overa ll C cha m p, Curt Larsen . In the C classes th ere was a fo u r wa y tie for th e overall. Werner was moved back 10 yards to the 30yard lin e du e to h is victory a week ago , but th e added handicap had little effect o n the l fi-year-old, as he o n ce again won in co n vincing fashi on.
