Musgrave wins Shamrocks Perris Grand Prix By Donnetta and Bob Murray PERRIS, CA. MAY ;.6 AMAJ Distriet 57 grand prix riders experienced a change of pace as the Shamrocks M.e. hosted their event at Perris Raceway. featuring an extended motocross which suited ATK's Willy Mu sgrave perfectly. Mu sgrave paced himself through his home co urse to wins in th e Pro, 250cc and Open classes over the two -day even t, Pri min g himself for th e 500ec motocross ~~tionals. ,Musgrave found plenty o f compen uon dunng th e Pro race . Craig Davi s. pi lot ing a 250cc Suzuki. grabbed the ho lesh o t, followed by Kawasak 's Ted H unnicutt and Larry Roeseler , and th et\" Musgrave. Barel y fOUT minutes la ter. the leaders were approaching the home stretch chicane when Roeseler . put th e mov e on Hunnicuu to claim second place and set himself up to pressure Davis. As H unni cuu and Musgrave pulled ar o und the HUllum in the second lap, Musgrave tri ed to get by H unnicutt. but fou nd himself caugh t u p in the ba nners a t the edge o f the course. Through the fifth lap , Davis continued to figh t off Roeseler , as Musgrave started 10 clos e in o n th~ fro m -run ners . Jo n Nelson, aboard a SUZUkI, recovered from a fall in the first tum of the race, passed H unnicu tt o n the back slra igh ta way and moved in to fourth. Roe5eler, who had already raced twice ear lier in th e da y, began to feel the effects of the heat (over 100"). It was evident to th e crowd that he was falling off the pace. Musgrave passed Roeseler right before th e chicane as the duo raced through the whoopde-doo section. Musgrave th en set his sights on Davis. but was o nly gai n ing a second a lap o n him. Going out o nto the seventh lap, Davis wen t dow n o n the top of a slippery u p hill tum, narrowi ng th e ga p to 10 seco nds between Davis and Musgrave. O n the next lap, Davis opted to SlOp for fuel . givi ng Mu sgra ve the lead ·' 1 knew 1 was goi ng to ru n out of gas a nd would have to p ull over to fuel, so I was trying to sprint fo r most of the race ," sai d Davis . "Musgrave went by me then and it blew my co ncen tration.,. Musgrave forged ahea d for ano ther four la ps to take the Pro purs e. Getting a piece of th e mon ey purse were Dav is. who fin ished second, Roeseler, Nelson and H unnicutt. A treme ndo us race be tween leader Roeseler and Mu sgrav e was enjoyed by the spectators during the 250cc race. The two swa pped lead s a co u ple of tim es, with Mu sgra ve lead in g the du o out onto th e third lap. Musgra ve la nded in a ru t co mi ng of f a jum p and his cha in derailed. Severa l riders passed him as he was rep a iring his chain, moving Musgrave bac k into fifth place. Taking posi tion of seco nd p lace was Brad Fay, fo llowed by Robert Baehr and Keith Loonsfoot. Slowly, but surely, Mu sgrav e passed everyone between him and Roesel er. Just when a no the r cl os e ra ce between th e two was imm inen t. Roeseler fell and injured hi s sho ulder. Musgrave ran away with the 2!>Occ win and even went an eXlra lap when the llaggers didn 't realize that he was the leader. Roe seler managed to hold onto sea;>nd. with Loonsfoo t claiming third, Fay taki ng fourth and Randy Moseley comi ng in fift h. Musgrave's third win of the weekend cam e in the last race - the Open class . Musgrave nabbed the holeshot, foll owed by KTM's Dan Smith , and the twosome separated th emselves from the pack if! no time at all . By the fourth lap. they were lapping rid ers. Musgrave was feeling really good and o bvio us ly had plenty of energy le!t to no t only hold off Smith, b~t put some ume betw een th e two. The pair lapped all the co ntenders to finish first and second. Downhill Alexander crossed th e chec kered flag i n th ird pla ce, while Mike Shitcomb took fourth overall and was first a ma teur to finish. Ro un d ing ou t th e top five was amateur Mike Davidge. Bertram out smarts 'em at Fools Gold Enduro By Tony Pavone GEORGETOWl', CA, MAY 6 Afier winning a three-year kn ock-down, drago u t ba ttle in federal circu it co urt against radical preservationi sts. th e Californ ia Enduro R iders Associ ation cele bra ted its victory by hosting its AMAIDistrict 36 Fool s Gold Enduro in Georgetown. This event was last run as a Nati onal Enduro in 1987. Of 367 entrants wh o bra ved th e technicall y cha llengi ng. Nati on al -caliber event, David Bertram edged ou t a on e-point victory over Dan Neilson, a nd 3 two-point margin over Donnie Sim o ne, to win the o vera ll. Bertram skidded acros s the fini sh lin e at mil e marker 92.4 with a sco recard showing seven late points. Fourth p lace went to Many Walden (I I ), and fifth to Jeff Irwin (12). In anot he r close co ntest. Pam MacDonald, won the Women 's 8 class, dropping 50 points to Barbara Mih ovi ch's 53. Rich ar d Brindos took overall B (19), while Jason Edie (20) topped the C class . Whether th e event would ever even start its Sunday morning 7:30 a.m . schedu led key time. was in do ub t until late Frida y n ight, when th e preservationists' last desperate a ttemp t for a n inj unctio n was th rown o ut by 9th Federal Circuit Court Judge Garcia in Sacramento. Judge Garcia opened the hearing at 3:00 p .m . Friday a hernoo n, said he had read the paperwork and was inclined to dismiss the injunction request. but all owed the antagonistic preservationists to present their case. For the nexl 30 minutes. Judge Ga rcia put up with the preservationists badmouthing motorcyclists. bad ·mouthing the U.S. Forest Service . a nd incredibly even bad · mouthi ng Federal Judge Lawrence Karllon. who had rendered the origina l decision, Fi nally, J udge Garcia had heard enough ranting a nd raving. and sternly dismissed the case. The enduro was o n! Given all the pre-race adverse publicity, lhe nex t fear of CERA members was that nobody would show up. The club had invested tho usands of dollars in publicity, insurance. troph ies a nd finisher pins.
