It would have been real interesting if we had sta rted side by side." " T he last la p I pulled four min ut es on Dan," said Roeseler. "We changed a wheel after lap th ree. We had a fresh kn obbie; Dan had a bald tir e. I just picked up the pace on th e last lap. I didn't want to tak e an y chances. I didn't kn ow if he had a seco nd wind and he thought he was going to try and sneak up on me." Roeseler claimed the checkers and th e silv er a fter lap four , four hours and 36 minutes after th e s ta rt . Smith cruised in five minutes la ter, and despite a flat tir e early into lap four, McKenna held third to th e finish, 12 minutes behind Smith. Del Carlo was a nothe r early contender, as was Hamel a nd Kawasaki's T ed Hunnicut. Del Carlo was just 14 seconds behind McKenna. Hunnicut, who had moved way up from his backof-the-pack startin g position, ended u p 31st aft er experienci ng sto mach sickness on the th ird lap. Fi nishing six th overa ll and first overall in th e B cla ss was th e ea rly leader-Richard Brindos. Brindos, who was th e overall C winner in " 1988, finished th ree minutes behind H am el, . and 15 minutes a head o f Open B class wi n ne r Chri s Peterso n. An dy Sega le, the top Veteran A class entra n t, finish ed seventh behind Brin do s, ahead of Veteran B class winner Willia m Grattean (14th), Senior A wi nner Rick Leffler (41st) and Super Sen ior A r id er Ri cha r d Christian (I 65th).
